The big school game (Classes 4A, 5A and 6A) kicks off at 3 p.m. The players were required to report to the Wool Bowl by Thursday at 1 p.m. Practices are scheduled for Thursday (2:30-4:30 pm), Friday (9-11:30 a.m. and 1:30-3:30 pm) and Saturday (9:30-10:30 am) for the big schools.
Here’s the breakdown of the roster for the Green Team in the Big Schools Game:
GREEN TEAM
Quarterback: Brandon Furbee Brandon Furbee 6'3" | QB Farmington | 2022 State NM (Farmington); Dallas Boyd Dallas Boyd 5'10" | 175 lbs | QB Las Cruces | 2022 State NM (Las Cruces).
Two different quarterbacks with Furbee being the big, strong-armed pocket passer while Boyd is the dynamic dual threat QB. Boyd is a member of the prestigious 1,000-1,000 club. Both QBs led their respective schools to the semifinals of the state playoffs. Both will play at the next level.
Running Back: Jake Barrera (Artesia); Marco Ybarra Marco Ybarra 5'10" | 190 lbs | RB St. Pius X | 2022 State NM (St. Pius X); Zack Thomas (Kirtland Central).
Barrera was a key member of Artesia’s Class 5A runner-up team, while Ybarra and Thomas were two of the best RBs in Class 4A. Ybarra rushed for 1,497 yards for the Sartans. Thomas had 1,537 rushing yards and 17 TD. Both Ybarra and Thomas are serious contenders for Class 4A Offensive Player of the Year.
Wide Receiver/Tight End: Nathan Lopez Nathan Lopez 5'5" | 135 lbs | WR Cibola | 2022 State NM (Cibola); Patrick Shay Patrick Shay 6'0" | 160 lbs | WR Farmington | 2022 State NM (Farmington); Tristen Ludi-Herrea (Bernalillo); Jeremiah Hartzol (Los Alamos); Kieran Cordova Kieran Cordova 5'10" | 145 lbs | WR Volcano Vista | 2022 State NM (Volcano Vista); Dalton Speis Dalton Speis 6'0" | 170 lbs | WR Sandia | 2022 State NM (Sandia).
Lopez was the state’s top receiver with 88 receptions for 1,216 yards and 14 TD. Shay was an underrated contributor to Farmington’s offense. Ludi-Herrera had 51 catches for Bernalillo. Cordova was a key member of Volcano Vista’s ‘Special K’ WR unit and finished tied for third in the state in receptions with 62.
Offensive Linemen: Braden Castillo (Los Lunas); Keith Franz (Mayfield); Charles Sanchez (Cleveland); Matt Franco Matt Franco OL Las Cruces | 2022 State NM (Las Cruces); Edgar Cuvas (La Cueva); Pablo Zaragoza (Goddard); Jayden Brown (Manzano).
Two O-Lineman come from state championship teams: Castillo and Sanchez. Los Lunas and Cleveland had outstanding ground games, which is a testament to the blocking up front.
Kicker/Punter: Adam Aguilera Adam Aguilera 5'8" | 160 lbs | WR Lovington | 2022 State NM (Lovington); Tyler Wilson (Albuq. Academy)
Defensive Line: Gavin Brumley (Hobbs); Jeff Irish (Roswell); Kolby Burton (La Cueva); Julius Espinosa (Ruidoso).
Brumley had 80 tackles for Hobbs. Irish was probably Roswell’s best defensive lineman this season.
Inside Linebacker: Tyler Martinez Tyler Martinez 6'1" | 180 lbs | DB Volcano Vista | 2022 State NM (Volcano Vista); Zander Doyle (Los Lunas); Alex Aldape (Mayfield); Dominic Vasquez Dominic Vasquez LB Cleveland | 2022 State NM (Cleveland).
Martinez made a staggering 145 tackles for Volcano Vista, making him a strong candidate for Class 4A Defensive Player of the Year. Vasquez was part of Cleveland’s stellar LB corps. Doyle led Los Lunas with 103 tackles.
Defensive End/Outside Linebacker: Brody Jaquez Brody Jaquez 6'4" | 230 lbs | DL Belen | 2022 State NM (Belen); Landon Williams Landon Williams 6'3" | 225 lbs | DL Albuquerque | 2022 State NM (Albuquerque); Gonzalo Garcia (Roswell); Layton Victor (Goddard).
Jaquez was first-team All-District for Belen after registering 15 sacks and 27 tackles for loss for the Eagles. Williams will play at the next level and has been one of the top defensive ends in the state all season long. He had 17 TFL. FCS schools, New Mexico and ENMU have expressed interest.
Secondary: Lucas Lucero Lucas Lucero 6'2" | DB Rio Rancho | 2022 State NM (Rio Rancho); Kevin Orona Kevin Orona 5'9" | DB Mayfield | 2022 State NM (Mayfield); Martell Mora Martell Mora 5'9" | 185 lbs | RB Santa Fe High | 2022 State NM (Santa Fe); Jonathan Fuentes Jonathan Fuentes 6'1" | 170 lbs | WR Carlsbad | 2022 State NM (Carlsbad); Cayden Dunn Cayden Dunn 6'1" | 180 lbs | RB Moriarty | 2022 State NM (Moriarty); Angel Segovia Angel Segovia 5'9" | 175 lbs | RB West Mesa | 2022 State NM (West Mesa).
Lucero is arguably the top defensive back in the state. He has the size (6-2, 195 pounds) and speed to excel at the next level. Mora was a two-way standout for Santa Fe. DB might be his best position in college. Fuentes was also an excellent two-way player for Carlsbad. Dunn was Moriarty’s leading rusher and an excellent DB.
Wild Cards: Zaiden Lopez (Artesia); Dillion Rivera (Organ Mountain).
