In honor of the holiday season we are going to highlight some of what should be on your wishlist if you’re a high school offensive linemen.
My name is coach Logan Tuley-Tillman and I run the first 24/7 globally accessible linemen training program, below are some of my must haves for my offensive line clients from the NFL guys that I work with to the Pop Warner youth athletes.
1, Wrist guards and finger tape
I see so many sprained wrists and jammed fingers at the youth and high school level from simply not having the fingers taped and wrists braced.
There are many options out there that one can google search, but the ones I liked the most when I played, were the Don Joy brand wrist guards. Any simple tape job can serve the same purpose but many youth and only few high school teams have trainers available to tape all of the linemen’s wrist daily so these are a huge help. Playing in the trenches is a physical altercation every single snap so it’s imperative that you take proper precautions to keep your hands and wrists healthy.
2, 6-10 lbs Medicine ball
Getting a light medicine ball under 10 pounds is optimal to help you put yourself back in game mode and allow you to keep repping your technique, even in the off season. My favorite drill to start off with is the drive start from a knee. In this exercise you put your back knee on a medicine ball and drive through your upfield foot to propel yourself back on your pass set angle. The weight of the medicine ball is perfect will allow you more options to work on your technique and help your overall core strength. Beyond the drive start from a knee in my program I believe in working the core as much as possible and you can use this light medicine ball for exercises such as Russian twists and V up toe touches.
3, Mini thumb casts
This item may sound a little foreign to most but they’re mini pieces of gold for offensive linemen, who like to strike and use their hands. When you think of striking properly in offensive line play, it has to be done with the palm or the spear tip as many call them and when you do that, it puts the thumb in positions where it can get easily hyperextended. Which doesn’t feel good if you have a 14 plus game schedule to play through. The mini thumb cast can be made when you get a small sheet of athroplast material, heat it up then apply and mold it over your game or practice gloves. Once you have applied the warm sheet of arthroplast onto the back of the thumb, wrap an ace bandage around it for two minutes or until it hardens up. Once it hardens, take it off use a sharpie to mark off the area that will splint your thumb from going backwards and wala. In my experience as a professional football player there were a lifesaver during training camp and games.
4, A @LT2FBA trench work membership.
LT2FBA stands for Logan Tuley-Tillman Football Academy. I founded this linemen specific training program while in undergrad at the University of Michigan. My earliest clients date back to 2014 and most recently spent this past summer in Tampa Bay, Florida consulting and training some of the Buccaneers and other NFL offensive linemen. Point in sharing, is that from the NFL defending super bowl champions to my 9U Grindhouse Elite south group my patented program teaches stance, start, run game, pass pro progressions and how to play the position.
