Open Division Championship Standouts (Offense)
In this article:
Saguaro was able to take home the open division state title on a 20-15 win over Chandler. This matchup was loaded with big time prospects and none of them failed to impress, as the talent in Arizona has proven it will and can compete with anyone. Here’s a look at the top offensive players of the game:
Devon Dampier Devon Dampier 6'0" | 190 lbs | QB Saguaro | 2023 State AZ , QB, Saguaro ’23
Dampier has played lights out throughout the playoffs, and nothing changed on Saturday night. His dual-threat ability was once again on full display as he was able to make a huge impact on the ground and through the air, establishing himself as a true X factor in this matchup. Very elusive with the ball in his hands with good COD and lateral agility, can decelerate or stop on a dime, then continue with a burst. Frequently makes initial opponents miss from anywhere on the field (pocket, behind LOS, traffic, space) and can bring physicality to the POC when he needs to. He read coverages well and threw with good timing and touch all night. A very impressive all-around athlete with loads of potential heading into 2022.
Quaron Adams Quaron Adams 5'9" | 165 lbs | ATH Chandler | 2022 State AZ , ATH, Chandler ’22
Adams once again showcased his elite speed, as he is a huge threat to account for, looking like the Tyreek Hill of Arizona High School football. His speed is on another level compared to anyone else I’ve seen thus far, and had a handful of plays that he was able to pick up solid chunks of yards with pure speed. Good twitch to his game as well and is a solid route runner from the slot with the ability to create a mismatch and take the top off the defense or generate clear separation. Very impressive speedster that is heading to Iowa State.
Javen Jacobs Javen Jacobs 5'10" | 185 lbs | ATH Saguaro | 2022 State AZ , ATH, Saguaro ’22
Jacobs had a 2 TD night for Saguaro and was a difference maker with the ball in his hands. Very dynamic player overall with the ability to change the game on the ground, as a receiver, or as a return man on special teams. He does a great job cutting off his blocks as a ball carrier with burst out of his cuts, and flashes good top end speed around the edges or in space. His 2nd TD of the night came on a vert from the slot where he was able to haul in a 24 yard TD from Dampier to give Saguaro some big momentum. Jacobs has never failed to step up in big time games, and he delivered on Saturday night.
Kyion Grayes Kyion Grayes 6'1" | 175 lbs | WR Chandler | 2022 State AZ , WR, Chandler ’22
The Ohio State commit is a fun kid to watch, as he is a creative route runner with a gifted athletic ability. Grayes shows a nice initial burst off the ball and sets up his routes well whether it be with patience or accelerating into his route, and is very fluid in and out of his breaks, He possesses that top end speed to take the top off the defense as well, and can be electric with the ball in his hands. He showed good body control and a solid football IQ during scramble drill to work levels. He does a great job blocking in the run and screen game, and is every bit worthy of that 4 star WR ranking. Ohio State fans should be pumped to have this kid in the fall.
Jaedon Matthews Jaedon Matthews 5'11" | 185 lbs | RB Saguaro | 2024 State AZ , RB, Saguaro ’24
Matthews came through on one of the biggest plays of the night where he caught a 45 yard seam for six. Lined up at RB, he snuck out not quite to the flat, but made it initially look like a flat route, then quickly burst vertical up the seam to be wide open and use that top end speed of his to house it. Another kid who is very dynamic with the ability to make a difference from multiple dimensions, as the young prospect continues to impress and will be a big time player next season for Saguaro.
Anyale Velazquez Anyale Velazquez 6'1" | 225 lbs | RB Chandler | 2022 State AZ , RB, Chandler ’22
Velazquez was able to make a statement on the first drive of the game, leading Chandler all the way down to the Saguaro goal line, where Jeremiah Moore Jeremiah Moore 5'10" | 200 lbs | RB Chandler | 2022 State AZ was able to punch it in. He sizes up with a thick and sturdy frame and build at 6’1″ 205lbs with a workhorse ability. He hits the hole with a purpose and brings a boom to the POC, as he is a very physical player all around. He’ll look for contact, truck an opponent, and keep moving forward. Very underrated back that is an absolute nightmare to bring down.
