Springfield was playing in the state finals for the first time in school history. On this night it was Eagles that would pull away and take the OHSAA Division 1 State title by the score of 23 to 13. The win gives the Eagles their fifth state football championship in school history.
As good as the Lakewood Saint Ed’s and Springfield defenses are, it was easy to believe that this game getting 1 or 2 critical stops would go a long way in determining who would win the Division 1 State title. Speaking of the Eagles defensive approach in playing Springfield Lombardo said the following. “We talked all week, all playoffs run really, it’s redzone. It’s not yards, it’s points, if you can hold them to field goal attempts, you have a chance, and we thought we could block a kick and we blocked one and almost blocked another one that caused him to hook it I think.”
