Not every freshman gets to experience the field under the lights of Friday nights. However, that does not mean that they are unable to make a name for themselves.
Attending workouts and camps are great ways for young players to make their introductions as prospects in the area. Having video clips of in-game action – freshman and, or JV – is a good way to show live competition, even if it is not on varsity.
Below is a list of five freshmen who possess the potential of being future superstars in the state.
Cameron Cooper Cameron Cooper 6'1" | 180 lbs | QB Pine Creek | 2025 State CO | Pine Creek | QB
Cooper is a young quarterback with a promising future. The 6-foot, 185lbs freshman has a big-time arm and promising poise within the pocket. He is a mobile athlete who can extend plays by escaping pressure and throwing on the run. His ability to recognize openings within the defense’s coverage and adjust his release accordingly is very impressive. Cooper is a special talent with a bright future who will undoubtedly make a big name for himself as a recruiting prospect.
Elijah Melendez | Thompson Valley | RB
If you are looking for the next big-time running back, Melendez is a perfect candidate. He is a 6-foot-1, 192lbs athlete who is making a strong claim for the title of best running back in the class. Melendez is a versatile RB who can run between-the-tackles, accelerate around the edge, and catch passes at multiple levels. His size, strength, acceleration, and vision as a ball carrier make him a viable option as a three-down back. Melendez had an impressive freshman debut and will be heading into his sophomore year under the spotlight.
Brock Kolstad Brock Kolstad 6'0" | 215 lbs | LB Fairview | 2025 State CO | Fairview | DE
Kolstad is on track to becoming another one of Colorado’s elite defensive linemen. The 6-foot-1, 210lbs edge rusher is already finding ways to defeat double-team blocks and wreak havoc in the backfield. His athleticism makes him a good fit for a hybrid edge-rushing outside linebacker role. Kolstad is one of a handful of young players to make a significant impact on a powerful playoff team.
Gunnar Clary Gunnar Clary 6'2" | 200 lbs | DL Eaton | 2025 State CO | Eaton | LB
Clary introduced himself to the state by being a contributing member of a championship defense. The 6-foot-2, 181lbs backer brings pressure off the edge with his quickness, relentlessness, and length. Clary is an athlete who can be used as a hybrid edge-rushing linebacker and productive member of special teams. Being a part of a state championship team in his first year has given Clary the tools and experience needed to become a sought-after prospect in his class.
Mason Carter Mason Carter ATH Vista Ridge | 2025 State CO | Vista Ridge | ATH
Carter is a physical player with phenomenal athleticism and raw talent. He is a do-all athlete who finds ways to make plays every time he steps on the field. As a defensive back, Carter has a nose for the ball and flies around the field initiating contact and finishing plays. Offensively, he is a reliable receiver who plays with the same physicality as he does on defense, especially when making blocks for his teammates. Cater is a hard-working player who is perhaps one of the bigger sleepers among the state’s newcomers.
