Peters has been one of my favorite films to watch at DB. I like his back pedal into his drops, and his vision. He knows how to cover his zone and put himself in the best position to make plays when more than one guy shows up in his zone. He never loses sight of his receiver while keeping his eye on the QB and stays tight to the receiver to make plays. He breaks extremely well and jumps routes better than anyone I’ve seen this year. He does really well in the one-on-one situations, if the QB didn’t throw a perfect ball, Peters was coming away with it, a real INT machine.
Chase Varilek Chase Varilek 5'9" | 150 lbs | DB Platte Geddes | 2022 State – Platte-Geddes
Varilek’s film was impressive to me because, though he would be considered undersized, he played like one of the biggest guys on the field. He played a nickel type DB and covered the flats mostly, but he did so very well. He was an amazing tackler, he sat on short routes, timed up throws, broke down and wrapped up and made tackles. He used perfect form technique on each play to make the tackles in space. If teams relied on the small-ball, short passing game, he took that away and made them find a different way to move the ball. He took really good angles to either get away from blocks or shake them real quick. He made many tackles for loss on the screen plays.
Jaden Supurgeci Jaden Supurgeci 6'0" | 170 lbs | DB Yankton | 2022 State – Yankton
Supurgeci is a textbook defender. He plays his position at corner fundamentally sound, back pedals well, sits on routes, breaks at the right time and makes plays. He reacts to the play and doesn’t anticipate, which makes him hard to burn on double moves. Keeps his eyes on both his guy and the QB to keep himself in the best position to make plays in the passing game, times his break, and jumps routes for the INT. He does his job perfectly on the perimeter runs, taking on his receivers block and positioning himself to turn the ballcarrier back inside. He was also scrappy enough to attack the ball if the ballcarrier wasn’t secure with it, a real takeaway monster.
Tucker Vilhauer Tucker Vilhauer 6'1" | 170 lbs | DB Mitchell | 2022 State – Mitchell
Vilhauer was a good last line of defense defender. He wasn’t going to throw a big hit every play, but he was not missing a tackle ever. He tracked the ballcarrier well, took a good angle and put his shoulder pad on the hip, wrapped up and brought the guy down. I believe that’s the textbook Seahawks Hawk Roll tackle. On pass defense, he sits back and plays centerfield and stays as the deepest man on the field to make plays on the deep ball. He does a good job waiting for the ball to leave the QB’s hand and flies across the field to make the play. He also does a good job playing the flat, making the QB make a decision whether to check it down or tuck and run, either way, he was making the play.
Matthew Martinez Matthew Martinez 5'8" | 170 lbs | DB Aberdeen Roncalli | 2022 State – Aberdeen Roncalli
Martinez is a textbook Strong Safety, he reads and tackles like a LB, but covers like a DB. He plays up in the box usually and really helps on run support. He fills his gap quickly and brings a big hit if he gets through unblocked. He moves laterally well, which helps him make tackles on shifty ball carriers, fake out blockers, and pass cover well in the flat. He has good hands and uses them well in press coverage, shedding blocks, and picking off passes. He has that sense of knowing where each receiver is and sits in a good spot to make plays in the passing game, by also reading the QB too. He flies everywhere on the field and makes tackles or gets into passing lanes.
