I will begin with the quarterbacks and move through the sections in numerical order. In this article, we take a look at New York’s Section V. This section encompasses schools located in Allegany, Cayuga, Genesee, Livingston, Monroe, Ontario, Orleans, Seneca, Steuben, Wayne, Wyoming, and Yates counties.
Drew Pagano, Webster Schroeder-2023:
The Warriors enter 2022 with a new signal caller, yet appear as though they won’t miss a beat. Drew Pagano is no stranger to the Webster Schroeder offense as he went 4/5 with 47 yards passing as the backup to Alex DeRosa in 2021. The Warriors return a decent number of offensive contributors from 2021. Pagano displays solid mobility and throws an accurate football. The sky is the limit for the Warriors now armed with Pagano’s talent coupled with the consistency of returning starters on offense. It will be interesting to see how Drew is able to perform as QB1 for Webster Schroeder this upcoming season.
Matthew Meacham Matthew Meacham 6'3" | 175 lbs | QB Honeoye Falls-Lima | 2024 State NY , Honeoye Falls- Lima-2024:
2022 signifies a big shift for the Cougars, as the vast majority of their contributors on both offense and defense are set to graduate this spring. Luckily, HFL has an excellent up and coming field general primed to take the reigns this fall. Following an illustrious JV career for the Cougars, Matthew Meacham Matthew Meacham 6'3" | 175 lbs | QB Honeoye Falls-Lima | 2024 State NY is destined to be the quarterback of the future. In just five games of Varsity action this past fall, Meacham passed for 300 yards, 3 touchdowns, and 1 interception while serving as the backup to Brody Young. Despite his age, Matt proved to be a polished passer with excellent pocket presence. The combination of Meacham’s physical and mental tools will allow him to be an absolute game changer for the Cougars in 2022. It’s rare that a quarterback this young displays such poise and confidence in the pocket, but Meacham is special. HFL and their next signal caller will be an absolute terror in Class B this fall.
Richie Brice, Avon-2023:
Despite limited action in 2021, Richie Brice appears to be the future of Avon football. In very limited playing time, Brice passed for 41 yards and a single touchdown. Brice spent this past season behind starter Andrew Rowland, who he split time with during the COVID shortened 2020 season. Brice brings experience to the quarterback position for the Braves, something that they will look to get back into the playoffs for the third straight year. Richie is an accurate, efficient passer. He saw moderate success in three appearances in 2020, passing for 420 yards, 3 touchdowns, and 5 interceptions. Now with a full season of holding the clipboard behind him, Richie will get the opportunity to show out in a big way in 2022.
Zymier Jackson, Greece Olympia/Greece Odyssey-2024:
Greece Olympia/Greece Odyssey’s Zymier Jackson was the perfect game manager in 2021. Jackson passed for 498 yards, 6 touchdowns, and 6 interceptions. He also added 248 yards and a single touchdown on the ground. Zymier has a strong arm, which was underutilized last season due to the team’s run centric offense. Even with less than one hundred passing attempts, Zymier’s talent was present. In an offense that flowed through him, we would likely see a massive leap in numbers. With a full year under his belt, Jackson will likely be given more freedom to operate in the offense. Zymier’s name is certainly one to watch as an impressive 2022 could certainly turn heads.
Jonathan Vance, Gates Chili-2024:
The Spartans enter 2022 with returning starter Jonathan Vance under center. Vance showed flashes of brilliance in 2021. His strong arm and ability to extend plays made him the perfect fit for Gates Chili’s offensive attack. While Jonathan’s stats may not back his on field production, there was little doubt in his talent. In nine games, Vance passed for 457 yards and 2 touchdowns, but a dismal 11 interceptions. Additionally, Vance rushed for a pair of touchdowns. The Spartans offense is facing a great overhaul this upcoming season with much of their starters graduating. A consistent, steady-hand is precisely what Vance can provide for Gates-Chili in 2022.
