On Signing Day, the school announced eight local athletes to its upcoming class, one that will be welcomed by a new head coach and will try to help turn around the program after an 0-11 season in 2021.
Here is a look at the local prospects joining Fort Lewis next year.
KB Broadus, 2022, 6’1, 195, Grandview (RB)
Shown to have played in the first three games for Grandview but did produce in the time he was on the field. Does a good job driving his feet at the point of contact and finding a way to keep moving forward for extra yardage. Excelled running between the tackles for tough yards, but does show a good burst when reaching the next level for big runs. Also has a good jump cut in the hole to evade tacklers. Broadus rushed for 186 yards on 29 carries (6.4 yards per carry) and scored five touchdowns.
Tanner Currant, 2022, 6’2, 250, Grandview (OL)
Played in the interior of the offensive line. Has a quick first step and gets off the line quickly, which helps him on down blocks, kick outs and more to open up some running lanes in the middle of the field. Does a good job with initial contact in pass protection and does a good job communicating when he passes the defender on to his teammate, but he will also come back and help when freed up. In the run game, he stays engaged with the defender and does not allow them to break free often. Will continue to bulk up his frame, which currently sits at 6-foot-2 and 250 pounds.
Khalil Ali-Fisher, 2022, 6’0, 195, Overland (LB)
Played on both sides of the ball over the last couple of seasons. A good athlete who plays with a strong motor and can fly all over the field. Showed great ball skills on the back end and was able to undercut some passes for a few interceptions. While playing mostly as a safety on defense, he has the size to move up in the box and may do so at the next level. Shows good form on a number of tackles against the run in his film. He also shows good angles to take to get to the ball carrier, even in situations where he stops a big run from going to the end zone for a lengthy score.
Jamille Humphrey, 2022, 5’10, Overland (WR)
Another two-way player for Overland who was productive. As a slot receiver, he showed a great ability to catch a short pass and find room to run after. Possesses great speed, a key to his success on the perimeter, and the team found many ways to get him the ball on the edge in both the run and passing game. That speed also allows him to streak down the field from the slot and take the top off the defense as well. The speed and shiftiness in the open field he displays will also make him a potential suitor to be a returner in the special teams, where he did both kickoffs and punt returns for his team.
Easten Leatherwood, 2022, 5’10, 150, Niwot (CB)
A productive three-year starter for Niwot. From his defensive back spot, he can use his speed and deception to undercut passes and get in the passing lane. Has good recovery speed to close the distance on a receiver down the field, and does a good point interrupting passes with his hands. His speed will help him play good coverage, and he will also make some stops, resulting in 35 total tackles in 2022. Also played running back, showing his toughness to play both ways and handle the load on both sides of the ball.
Jordan Staley, 2022, 6’0, 185, Durango (DB)
Saw action all four years he played for Durango, a top program in Class 3A during his high school career. He is a cornerback who is willing and good at helping against the run. He plays great outside contain, forcing running backs to cut up to the middle against his teammates, and he tackles well in space. Flies with a force to the ball, which made him a key cover man in special teams as well. A good athlete that matches his speed with his physical play on the field. Staley recorded 54 tackles in his senior year, more than half the total tackles he had in his high school career.
Walter Stauffer, 2022, 6’6, 255, Durango (DL)
Stauffer has a good frame and long arms, and he uses that to his advantage to get leverage on the defensive line. Is able to take on blocks in the run game and stand firm at the line of scrimmage. Does a good job setting the edge for his team. When able to get downfield, shows an ability to create some havoc and get some stops in the backfield as a result. Does not rarely get seen moving backwards when engaged with offensive lineman. Stauffer had 27 tackles and seven sacks in the 2021 season.
Brett Stonebraker, 2022, 6’0, 230, Overland (FB)
Has an excellent motor, which helped him produce on the offensive and defensive lines in his career. On defense, he did a good job getting off blocks and pursuing down the line or in the backfield when he got free. Finishes through the ball carrier at the point of contact. His physical game was on display up front on offense as well, as he did a good job handling bigger defensive tackles with his leverage. A player with multiple years of experience, Fort Lewis will find a position for him to use his skills at the next level.
