Dannenbring is one of those to rather watch his play than just look at his size. He has good arm strength, accuracy, and mobility. I liked his pocket presence and how he scrambles to extend plays along with the accuracy of the pass on the run. He has good speed and agility to be a dangerous dual-threat QB. I also like his arching throws where he drops it in the bucket perfectly to his WR, especially in the red zone. One thing I would like to see more is getting the ball out quicker on some reads and not always relying on scrambling each play.
Michael Rostberg Michael Rostberg 6'4" | 210 lbs | QB Shanley | 2023 State – Fargo Shanley
Rostberg has the frame to stick out on paper. He also has the arm strength and patience to let routes develop and find the open man. I like how he also threw his man open on the timing routes and did not force the pass into tight places. He had good pocket presence and a good internal clock to escape and extend plays. He kept his eyes downfield and made the throws on the run, still having nice zip on the ball and good accuracy. I would like to see him work on his upper-body mechanics in his throwing, stay pointed toward his target and following through on the pass, really focusing on not trying throw the ball to hard to keep a good spiral on his ball.
Lucas Slack Lucas Slack 6'1" | 190 lbs | QB Brandon Valley | 2023 State – Brandon Valley
Slack seems like the methodical QB. His pass game looks like it comes out of play-action so he is throwing on the run a lot. He doesn’t look the make the deep pass on each play, instead looks to get the ball out quickly and letting his receivers make plays after the catch. He is pretty accurate on the routes on the perimeter, and throws a nice, tight spiral. He reads well to find the soft spot in the defense and getting the ball to receivers in open space. He is a physical runner as well, and has the speed to break off big plays. I would like to see him stay tall on his throws and not fade back when he releases the ball.
Tray Hettick Tray Hettick 6'2" | 190 lbs | QB Herreid/Selby | 2023 State – Herreid-Selby
Hettick may be the biggest steal of the class because of the small school classification. He has a good frame, arm strength, accuracy and poise in the pocket. I like how much command he has on the ball throwing certain routes, like the ones on the perimeter and deep up the seam. He runs really well, both for speed and for power. He has good awareness of the sticks and makes the play to get there on key downs. I would like to see him work on selling his play fakes more before he turns to make throws in play-action, but also keeping his eyes downfield when scrambling. I would also like to see him set his feet more to make throws, particularly the deeper throws.
Taylen Ashley Taylen Ashley 6'0" | 175 lbs | QB Sioux Falls Jefferson | 2023 State – Sioux Falls Jefferson
Ashley is electric with the football. He is hard to contain and keep from making plays with his arm and his legs. He does a good job keeping his eyes downfield and being patient for the routes to develop. Once he starts to scramble, he is a nightmare to stop, he is very agile and has good vision to make moves and make the big runs. He has good balance and strength to push through arms tackles and keep his footing on sideline runs. He accelerates quickly once he is in open space. I would like to see him commit to his throws more. Setting his feet, pointing to his target and following through. Also setting his feet and staying tall on his throws on the run.
Rugby Ryken Rugby Ryken QB Yankton | 2023 State – Yankton
Ryken broke out this year and had a great season. He knew how to utilize each of his weapons to the best of their abilities. He was crazy accurate on each of his passes, deep or short. He could squeeze the ball into the tightest of windows, with the defender draped all over his receiver. He moved well in the backfield with his pocket presence and rolling out. He could extend plays well and keep his eyes down field and made good throws. The only thing I could pick out to work on was getting the ball out quicker on some deep throws, and not staring down his receiver on the play.
Jayden Speraw Jayden Speraw 6'1" | 170 lbs | QB Minot | 2023 State – Minot
Speraw is a very mobile and accurate QB. He is quick in the backfield and covers a lot of ground when he rolls out in a short amount of time. He puts the ball in a good place so the defenders can’t make the play. He is difficult to contain in the pocket, and is very accurate on the run, dropping dimes on the deep ball. He is very good at getting good depth on his drops, and getting the ball out quickly to his receivers, hitting them on the breaks. I would like to see a little more zip on the shorter throws he makes and him pointing at his receiver and staying tall on his deep heaves.
Braeden Wulf Braeden Wulf 6'2" | 185 lbs | QB Lennox | 2023 State – Lennox
Wulf flew under my radar the whole season, and I can’t believe I let that happen. On film, he has a good frame, good speed, and good arm strength with accuracy. He had great timing with his receivers and their routes, hitting them in perfect stride almost every play. He does a good job being patient, getting his reads, and throwing the receiver open each play. He was a huge rushing threat as well when the defense would worry about the receivers too much, he would pull down and break off a huge play. I would like to see him set himself more on his short, quicker throws and putting more zip on the passes.
Payton Hochhalter Payton Hochhalter 6'2" | 190 lbs | QB Jamestown | 2023 State – Jamestown
Hochhalter was a quick, precise passer. He took his three step drop and delivered a dart to his receivers before the defense could set up. He put a lot of zip on the ball on his short routes and put them in the best place for his receivers to make plays after the catch. He did a good job looking off defenders and then going to his favorite route on that play, and delivering a strike to the receiver. He also had good mobility and could climb the pocket and make a play with his legs, just as good as with his arm. I would like to see him stay tall and follow through on his passes, and not wait so long when he rolls out of the pocket.
Jed Jenson Jed Jenson 6'0" | 170 lbs | QB Rapid City Stevens | 2023 State – Rapid City Stevens
Jenson has excellent arm strength and accuracy, especially on the deep ball. He does a good job going through all his reads and making the best decision for the play, and delivers a good ball. He sets his feet every time to really get everything he can out of the throw. He scrambles well and can be a scary ballcarrier as well. He has speed and will be physical as he runs. He shows good vision and agility to really extend plays. I would like to see him make quicker decisions and get the ball off quicker and not rely on the deep ball each play.
