With the many different formations, schemes and different coaching ideas on how to use RB’s there are a lot of different reasons to like the different types of athletes you end up finding in this position. This particular class had very few kids that would match up attributes and how well they used each of them. Due to the many different play styles I won’t be able to say what I would like to see more out of these kids, because it might conflict with a coach’s play style. Any one of these kids would do extremely well at the next level so check them out here below!
Brenden Begeman Brenden Begeman 6'2" | 195 lbs | RB Herreid/Selby | 2023 State – Herreid-Selby
Begeman was exactly one of those backs that would be moved around to make plays for the offense. He would dot the I when he was put in the backfield. He was patient in letting his blocks develop and finding the best gap to run through. He could also be split out wide and be used as a deep threat, or be used in the small-ball, screen game. He has good vision and agility when running the ball. He also has good speed and will run over a guy that gets in his way. I would like to see him run over a lot more guys, and get North-and-South quicker to accelerate quicker.
Hadley Wallace Hadley Wallace 5'10" | 190 lbs | RB Hanson | 2023 State – Hanson
The Hanson offense is what some people would call caveman offense, or run a lot and pass only when needed, but with athletes like Wallace on your team, it works great for everyone. He reads and follows the blocks and bursts through the gap and explodes into the open field. Once he gets up to top speed, he is nearly impossible to catch. He has the vision and awareness for the cutback, and balance and strength to fight through arm tackles and re-accelerate quickly. He is another one to be split out wide and be a dangerous threat in the passing game as well. I would like to see maybe a little more physicality in his runs.
Nelson Wright Nelson Wright 5'9" | 200 lbs | RB Sioux Falls Jefferson | 2023 State – Sioux Falls Roosevelt
Nelson is a more between the tackles runner. He doesn’t go out to the perimeter when he gets carries. He follows his blocks well and runs through the gaps to accelerate quickly. He is a bruiser type of back, not looking to dance with the defenders each play, instead lowers his head and runs through them. He stills has agility, will make one cut out to the perimeter once he crosses the line of scrimmage. He has good vision to look for cutback lanes and letting his blocks develop on the back side. I would like to see him make a couple more moves, instead of searching for a defender to run through every play.
Trey Heinrich Trey Heinrich 6'0" | 175 lbs | RB Kindred | 2023 State – Kindred
Heinrich has a lot of sneaky speed. He looks really smooth when he runs, but covers a lot of ground in a short amount of time. Though his frame isn’t as big as a lot of others, he is not afraid to lower his shoulder and run a guy over. He is very agile, but doesn’t rely on it, he will make a good move in open space then accelerate past the defender for a big play. He does a good job bouncing and stretching plays to the outside, but finds the first open gap and explodes through it. I would like to see how good of a pass-catcher he could be as well.
Carl Henry Carl Henry 5'11" | 190 lbs | RB Bismarck Legacy | 2023 State – Bismarck Century
Henry is another explosive back that can break a big play at any point on the field. He only has the one speed, full-speed. He takes the handoff and gets to top speed as soon as possible and makes it extremely hard to contain him. He makes one good, hard cut and finds the open space, loves to stay North-and-South. He will run through a defender if he can’t outrun him. He shows good balance on the sideline, getting as many steps in bounds before getting push out. I would like to see him carry the ball on his outside arm at all times.
Peyton Arndt Peyton Arndt RB Bismarck Century | 2023 State – Bismarck Legacy
Arndt shows a lot of good qualities when he touches the ball. He accelerates quickly after getting the ball and bursts through the gap and stays in the open space. He is agile and has good vision, but makes one cut and gets back to full speed as soon as possible. He also has strength to run through defenders, and will drag the ones hanging on to him. He has good spacial awareness and balance on the sidelines, while fighting off defenders as well. He switches hands to keep his inside arm free when he changes directions. I would like to see a lower pad level on some inside runs, would also help the play-fakes on play-action.
Chase Van Tol Chase Van Tol 6'1" | 185 lbs | RB Tea Area | 2023 State – Tea Area
Van Tol has a great motor coming out of the backfield. He accelerates extremely get and gets out to the perimeter in a hurry. He is very elusive and slippery, slips out of a lot of tackles and keeps on running. He always keeps the legs turning and does not stop until the whistle blows, which is when he can turn big plays bigger. He has excellent speed once in open space, and is very agile to makes moves in open space as well. He also takes pride in his pass blocking, and keeps his QB upright when he doesn’t go on pass routes. He is a dangerous receiving threat because of his height, speed, hands and attitude going up and reeling the pass in. I would like to see his pad level lower in traffic more to protect himself.
Karson Carda Karson Carda 6'0" | 210 lbs | RB Aberdeen Central | 2023 State – Aberdeen Central
Carda is a solid runner out of the back field, he will gain positive yards on each play. He will run through, around or past each any defender on any given play. He has good balance to shake off tacklers and keep his footing to extend plays. He has good agility to make a guy miss, or jump into the open gap to break off a big run. He is patient to let blocks develop and run through those gaps when they appear. He has good strength to keeps legs turning and spin his way out of tackles. I would like to see lower pad level for him when taking hits, a little more security with the ball and setting up defenders to be blocked in open field.
Tate Hoffman Tate Hoffman 5'10" | 180 lbs | RB Miller/Highmore/Harrold | 2023 State – Miller/Highmore/Harrold
Hoffman is a back with a lot of grit. He puts his head down, and runs into the defense at full speed, runs through a guy, and keeps going. He gets North-and-South as soon as possible and gets to full speed quickly as well. He has a strong motor to run through a defender and keep the legs turning until he gets free. He is a good pass blocker to give his QB time to throw. He has a good stiff arm to keep defenders off of him. I would like to see him use a little more agility and be more secure with the football, especially in traffic.
Owen Quail Owen Quail RB Deuel | 2023 State – Deuel
Quail was another bruiser type back. He also had a good mix of speed to add a good combination in the backfield. He was patient on the perimeter runs and then made a quick cut up the field and accelerated through the gaps when they opened. He lowered his shoulder and ran through defenders, also a good motor to keep driving through defenders that latch on to him until the whistle blows or he goes down. He does a good job not dancing, sticking his foot in the ground and re-accelerating quickly to full-speed. He also does a good job in pass protection for some extra time for the QB. I would like to see him work on his vision so he could make a couple moves in open space.
