Continue ReadingThere’s no secret that the class of 2025 is loaded with QBs in MS. It seems like there is a good one in almost every region of the state this year. I have the privilege to be able to get out and see so many of them work. Most of them train with 601 Elite QBs or either M3 Training. They keep the state informed with the best of the signal callers around. There is something special about this class of QBs in Mississippi. It seems they are all natural horn leaders. At least five of them are 6-2 or taller. They all seem to be so poised under pressure. It is going to be great to see these guys continue to mold into greater players over the years.
KaMario Taylor, 6-3 185, Noxubee County
KaMario is a stud out of Macon, MS by way of Noxubee County High School. The Tigers were pioneers of the spread game in the state of Mississippi. Back when a lot of teams were still sticking it up the middle and running end around plays, they were tossing it up. It’s no secret every now and again they will have a “dude” at QB. KaMario Taylor is a dude.
Taylor is a kid who understands the QB position already. He is very easily coached. This kid loves the game and wants to listen. He enjoys obtaining knowledge and he uses that same knowledge to help his teammates. He progresses through his reads very well and he does a great job not staring down receivers. He has a big arm as well and can complete any throw on the field. He has a very quick release and doesn’t hesitate when he needs to get the ball out on time. Taylor does a great job fitting the ball through tight windows and he isn’t afraid to make the check down throw for shorter yardage. He does a good job rolling out with the ball as well. Taylor is a pocket passer so he is not looking to scramble on bootleg plays. He keeps his head up analyzing the field and will find fhe right receiver every chance he gets. On the deep ball he sometimes has the tendency to leave it hanging too long. I think some of those throws could have less air not allowing the corner to catch up or the safety to run under it. KaMario will be surrounded by a plethora of talented receivers. He has a very high chance to throw for 2500 yards with 25 passing TDs. Look for him to have an amazing year.
Xavier Hunt, 6-0 160, Louisville
The Louisville Wildcats have one of the best traditions in the state. Ten state championships don’t come by easy and you need a QB to lead your dogs. They have dogs who are ready to hunt every season. The Wildcats have a long list of guys who were great dual threat QBs throughout the state of MS. The last one was Drea Shumaker. Xavier Hunt is the next guy to be that dual threat for the Wildcats. He will get tested a lot this season, but I believe he is up to the challenge.
Xavier is very raw, but his talent level is real high. He is a natural athlete who can handle any situation you throw at him. Xavier does well throwing the ball. He has a nice arm and very quick release. He can spin it with the best of them. He can throw deep balls and has a lot of confidence on the field. He isn’t going to be a guy to throw a lot of interceptions. He does a great job of looking defenders off. He has good placement on the football. He can fit the ball into tight places. Louisville has a new offensive coordinator this year so Hunt and the new coach will be able to grow together. I watched them during their spring game and I also have been following them this summer during 7v7. Hunt has led them to a championship victory and two runner up victories this summer during the 7v7 circuit. I would like to see him hit the check down a lot more. Every play does not have to go for ten yards or better. I also think he could get a better understanding of downs and yardage too. Sometimes he can be all arm. When he uses great mechanics and gets his legs in his throws he delivers accurate missiles almost every time. He doesn’t have a lot of recognition, but he will have a big year for Louisville. Look for him to have some very diverse stats.
Kendetryon Backstrom, 6-2 180, Kemper Co
Kendetryon is a tall long guy who will be one of the difference makers on offense for the Wildcats this year. The new coaching staff is placing the ball in his hands and it’s time for Backstrom to lead the show. He is another guy that is raw, but will use his legs to help him get out of bad situations. He is a very talented athlete who excels in more than one sport. He is a natural born winner and will find a way to make plays. Backstrom is very strong can throw a nice ball. He has a lot of room to grow into a nice frame. It won’t surprise anyone if he is a 6-4 215 pound kid by the time he is a senior. He does a great job of throwing the ball on the run. I think he will be able to succeed in the power spread offense the Wildcats will be running this year. RPOs are going to be his friend and I think the read option will be a thing for them this year as well. I can see him racking up a lot of yards like Cam Newton did for Auburn. He has great size so he will be able to bounce around and get some tough yards this year. I think he has potential to be a great passer as well. The remainder of this summer he needs to be working very hard on understanding the passing game. He has a lot of time to grow. Backstrom is going to have a nice year. I can see him rushing for 800 yards, throwing for another 1500 with 25 total TDs this year. He will help out at other positions besides QB this season also.
Noah Gillon, 6-3 180, Booneville
Noah Gillon has transferred from Tupelo to Booneville. I think it is time for 2A North to look out. Booneville has added a very vital missing piece to their game. Noah will make a big change. He comes from a school who loves to sling the ball.
Noah has a very nice arm. He can make a lot of throws guys his age can’t make. He makes great reads and gets the ball out on time. He has a nice touch on his deep passes, but also knows when to take the touch off and get it to his receiver. Noah does a great job of surveying the field as well. He is not going to force the pass to the designated receiver. He knows how to progress through his reads and find and open man. Watching his film you can see a lot of plays where he could have tossed it to his running back for more yards. I think he needs to get more comfortable with that simple check down. On this level guys will be more equipped to intercept some passes he made over the middle when he could have just dumped it to the back. Noah is another young guy who forgets to put those legs in his throws. I think once he fixes a few minor things we will be looking at another top QB prospect for the class of 2025.
Cameron Gibson, 5-11 180, Port Gibson
Cameron will be the signal caller for Port Gibson this year. He played quite a bit for their varsity team last year. He has a lot of work he can do, but the potential is there. He throws a nice ball and is very strong. He has a lot of room to grow to be a 6-1 guy around 200 pounds. He is very much of a dual threat QB at this time. When he takes off he is one to be reckoned. One of the best things I see when he scrambles is that he doesn’t mind sliding. That’s always a great sign. He has some great passing plays on his film. He can get the ball out on time and he also can complete the deep pass. I don’t have many predictions for Cameron as of now, but I know he will have a good season. The more off-season work he does the better. He is a guy that can play another skilled position besides QB at the next level.
