As I have previously stated before, Kentucky houses a lot of talent and it stays valid for defensive backs. These scholarship offers can be ranged from JUCO to D1 schools. Today, I will be listing 5 Defensive backs I would give a scholarship to right now.
Andrew Hatcher DB/KR | 6-0,170lbs. Class of 2023 | Greenwood High School, KY | Tape:
Andrew is an athletic speedster playing the nickelback position at Greenwood High. What is most impressive about this kid beside his ability to lock down defenders on man coverage is his explosive speed on the field. Not only can Andrew keep up with any opposing receiver playing DB, but he can also return kicks as he is the team’s primary return kicker. The 2023 grad returned multiple kicks for at least 40-50 yards and even returned one for a touchdown. His speed and eye coordination enable him to be a superior multi-threat player for any team to have. If I was any DIII school or above in Kentucky, I would keep my radar on Andrew as he still has a year left to further develop his game.
Josiah Eubanks DB/OLB | 6-0,176lbs. Class of 2024 | Fern Creek High School, KY | Tape:
It’s really fun watching Josiah play football as you can tell how much passion he puts into the game on every snap. What is notable about Josiah is his ability to consistently make defensive stops while tackling. Although Josiah is a nickelback, he also plays outside linebacker, so adding his strength and good field vision, it makes it easy for Josiah to switch onto an opposing ball carrier to make a stop. Most of his attributes are compared to that of players older than him or even collegiate DBs which is why it is incredible that Josiah already mastered these abilities only being a sophomore. Although I expect to see more DB action next fall, his ability to make defensive stops consistently and with little difficulty proves he deserves attention from college recruits. Josiah is worthy of some local offers and any Juco/DIII schools looking for a solid defensive presence.
Deshaun Cooper | 6-0,160lbs. Class of 2023 | Louisville Male High School, KY | Tape:
Deshaun is an elite ball hawk that can predict where the ball is going to be thrown and easily track it down. Louisville Male High School already has produced top-notch talent and it includes Deshaun in that mix. The junior completed multiple interceptions during the season including a pick-six to top it off. Deshaun’s explosive speed also allows him to make a hard tackle on the opposing ball carrier. Combined with his stellar footwork, explosive speed, and great ball tracking makes him a formidable threat for any opposing receiver matching up with him. Deshaun is easily capable of playing college ball right now and I will expect offers to start piling up once his senior season rolls around in the fall.
Corion Gilbert Corion Gilbert 6'0" | 180 lbs | DB Pleasure Ridge Park | 2023 State KY |6-0, 180lbs. Class of 2023 | Pleasure Ridge Park High School, KY | Tape:
Corion Gilbert Corion Gilbert 6'0" | 180 lbs | DB Pleasure Ridge Park | 2023 State KY is another top-tier ball hawk that is quick enough to keep up with any opposing receiver he is put up against. Along with that is his amazing footwork when on man coverage, always adjoined with the opposing receiver when on the run. What I like about Corion’s game that differs from traditional DBs is when the ball is in the air, Corion not only attempts to deflect the ball but also blocks out any gaps for the receiver to be able to make the catch. Usually, when DBs do this they get called for a PI but Corion has effectively performed this with no calls in multiple plays and it makes it nearly impossible for a receiver to catch the ball. This defensive IQ is remarkable and if I were a recruiter I would consider adding Corion to my defensive back arsenal.
Kenyon Goodin Kenyon Goodin 6'3" | 185 lbs | ATH Martha Layne Collins | 2023 State KY DB/WR | 6-3,190lbs. Class of 2023 | Collins High School, KY | Tape:
Although I have mentioned Kenyon Goodin Kenyon Goodin 6'3" | 185 lbs | ATH Martha Layne Collins | 2023 State KY in a previous article, I want to make it more known that this stud should be receiving more notice from college recruiters and coaches. The upcoming senior is up there as one of the best DBs in the state, possessing superior ball vision, lockdown man coverage, and top-notch tackling ability. Even though Kenyon has already received DI offers from a few schools, I am shocked that this young man has not received any more interest recently. Kenyon is an extremely humble kid who is eager to get better at every aspect of his game, even though he is already a top athlete. As a college recruiter, I would be interested in a kid who wants to continue to excel at his game despite them already being at an elite level of play. I can’t wait to see how much success this kid is going to have soon.
