Pool play for the 12-team event will begin at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, with the tournament portion of the day commencing at approximately 3:25 p.m. Throughout, the big arms leading some top-notch offenses will be the name of the game.
Here are nine we’ll be keeping a close on during the day.
Bryan McCartt, Wilson
After throwing for 516 yards and four touchdowns last year while splitting time at the positing, McCartt has all the tools in place to squash his 2021 numbers in a hurry. That’s largely due to what may be among the most well-rounded receiving corps in the state. Zandae Butler Zandae Butler 6'1" | 195 lbs | WR Wilson | 2023 State SC , Jyron Waiters Jyron Waiters 5'11" | 180 lbs | WR Wilson | 2024 State SC and Donnell Williamson Donnell Williamson 5'11" | 170 lbs | ATH Catawba Ridge | 2023 State SC are all coming back, too.
Devin Grainger Devin Grainger 6'1" | 170 lbs | QB Conway | 2024 State SC , Conway
Grainger is the type of athlete who would excel in probably any sport. He’s got a great knack for learning the intricacies of multiple sports. Last fall, he got his first crack as a varsity starting quarterback. All he did with it was throw for 1,400-plus yards in eight games. Grainger is the key to the Conway offense.
Joe Boyd Joe Boyd 6'2" | 195 lbs | QB Clover | 2023 State SC , Clover
Boyd spent the spring impressing in track and field, where he was launching a discus right into the Class 5A state finals (he finished 9th). He’s big (6-foot-2 and 200 pounds) and strong and has the tools to lead Clover back to the state football playoffs, as well. Boyd’s arm strength is only just now coming into focus.
Wyatt Cannon, Myrtle Beach
For months, everyone assumed the job was Cannon’s. That’s changed with some of the last week’s happenings (more on that below), but the rising junior is still part of the mix until he’s told otherwise. He’s comfortable in Mickey Wilson’s spread offense and has already taken varsity snaps. Either way, at worst, Cannon will get plenty of reps Thursday.
Drew Moore Drew Moore 6'3" | 175 lbs | QB Goose Creek | 2023 State SC , Goose Creek
During the Palmetto Combine series during the spring, two Lowcountry coaches said Moore was among the most difficult opposing quarterbacks to game plan for. At 6-foot-3 and 175 pounds, Moore isn’t exactly a dual-threat player, but he is more than comfortable running when he needs to. During this event, we expect to see how he operates in his more natural setting.
LaNorris Sellers LaNorris Sellers 6'3" | 215 lbs | QB South Florence | 2023 State SC , South Florence
The last 10 months have been a whirlwind for the big Bruins’ quarterback. He started off the 2021 season on fire after verbally committing to Virginia. Then, he injured his shoulder, required surgery and missed the last few games of the regular season and the team’s playoff appearance. He backed off that commitment and switched to Syracuse, although now that he’s healthy again, the attention hasn’t stopped. Why? Sellers can flat out put on a show.
Deuce Hudson Deuce Hudson 6'0" | 165 lbs | QB West Florence | 2023 State SC , West Florence
Hudson is clearly more of a running quarterback – it’s what he’s asked to do in this run-first offense. It’s why he rushed for 1,036 yards last year. However, he also passed for just shy of a 1,000 yards while completing 58 percent of his passes. Hudson is a gamer, and the competition of the 7-on-7 will be another indication of how much he’ll be asked to do in the fall.
Raheim Jeter Raheim Jeter 6'3" | 220 lbs | QB Spartanburg | 2023 State SC , Spartanburg
After being shot in the left leg during a road rage incident in February, Jeter underwent a surgery to repair the damage and swore he’d come back stronger. All signs are pointing to exactly that. The West Virginia verbal commitment impressed his coaches during spring practices and is still picking up other offers, meaning colleges are convinced he’ll be fine, too.
Trey Dunn Trey Dunn 6'1" | 180 lbs | QB Myrtle Beach | 2023 State SC , Myrtle Beach
If you wanted a wild card for this even, Dunn is it. Up until last week, Dunn was the No. 2 overall player (and top quarterback) in the Prep Red Zone West Virginia rankings. Then, on June 3, he announced that he was moving to Myrtle Beach. The 6-foot-1, 205-pound signal caller has gone through a few practices with the Seahawks, but Thursday will be his first live action.
