In this article, we take a look at a handful of players who deserve an opportunity at a small college program. But first, we take a look at a running back in McKinney who has a chance to develop into a high-level player.
RB Sheldon King – 5’9″ 180 / McKinney Boyd HS — @SheldonK_
King is an explosive back that’s dangerous in the open field. Gets up field in a hurry and easily beats arm tackle attempts. Would like to see him add a little weight as a senior, but the speedburner will catch a lot of eyes this season.
Could develop into a Group of Five running back, but will need to spend a year or two at a junior college. I think he’ll get that opportunity.
TE Oliver Monrose – 6’4″ 215 / Alvarado HS — @Oliver_Monrose
Monrose shows a lot of promise as a run blocker. Does not have a ton of film, but there’s no denying the intensity and physicality the soon-to-be senior plays the game with. Has the potential to develop into a quality player for a small college program.
Would be a nice pickup for a D3 or NAIA school.
OT Lorenzo Gonzalez – 6’3″ 330 / Waco La Vega HS — @RealLorenzo76
A stalwart at left tackle for the Pirates, Gonzalez projects as a guard at the next level. He plays the game with a nastiness in the ground game, and is a reliable path-clearer for the running back behind him. Would like to see him fire off with more aggression, but there is a whole lot to like.
Would be a nice pickup for a D3 program. Quality starter potential.
S Mecca Walker – 5’10″ 170 / Waco La Vega HS — @Waaalker6
A mainstay on the Pirates’ defense, Walker flashes a lot of ability when coming downhill to both defend the flat and support against the run. He is smooth in his backpedal and changes direction very well. Very nice sideline-to-sideline speed.
Would be a nice pickup for a D3 program.
RB Stevin Kemp – 5’11″ 180 / Bullard HS — @StevinKemp20
A workhorse back who is tough to get to the ground, Kemp is the kind of runner you better come correct with when trying to tackle. He’s got enough explosiveness to break off the occasional 30+ yard run, and has great wiggle in the open field to make defenders miss.
Would be a nice pickup for a smaller program looking for a running back who can develop into a quality player.
