It’s the month of July and that means it’s preview time! Throughout the month of July, we are publishing 100 team previews to get you ready for the 2022 season. This is something that began last year and has become even bigger and better this year. We’re looking forward to diving deep into the top teams across the state. From defending champs, to top contenders and dark horses, we’ll have complete coverage every single day with new teams from Class 6A down to A. In this post, we take a look at the Seminole Chieftains. With the state’s all time winningest coach leading them once again, the Chieftains look to return as contenders.
Seminole Chieftains
The Seminole Chieftains come into this season as a perennial power once again and therefore have to be a team to watch in Class 3A. They had a solid 2021 season but they’re looking to have more playoff success. They haven’t made a deep playoff run in nearly a decade and they feel confident that 2022 is the year that it turns around. They took a step towards that last fall with a 9-2 season. The only loss in the regular season came to 3A perennial power Lincoln Christian. They had a showdown with Verdigris in the first round of the playoffs but would lose a shootout to the Cardinals and got bounced out of the playoffs early. The Chieftains come into this season looking to not only make it back to the postseason but to make a deep run.
The Chieftains return quite a bit of their offense, including the majority of their skill position players. That will definitely help because the offensive line will be completely rebuilt with several new starters on the line. The defense is in the same ball park where the line of scrimmage will be a work in progress throughout the season but the secondary has some serious talent returning. The Chieftains find themselves in one of the tougher districts in Class 3A and that, combined with a tough non-district schedule will definitely provide plenty of challenges this fall. Head coach Mike Snyder enters year number 43 as Seminole’s head coach and the Chieftains want to deliver him one more state championship before he calls it a career.

. He’ll line up primarily at quarterback on the offensive side of the ball but the Chieftains will use him in a variety of spots on offense as he’s a dual-threat quarterback that is equally as dangerous throwing the ball as he is running the ball. Then on defense, Wassana is a ball hawk in the secondary and a playmaker on that side of the ball. Wassana has the chance to have a big senior season and his recruitment should take off following that.

2022 Schedule/Games To Circle
Aug. 26 – AT Canadian, TX.
– Seminole is opening the 2022 season in the lone star state as they’ll face off with Canadian in Texas. Canadian is coming off a season in which they won the Texas state championship and they’ve been one of the better teams in their class over the last few years. Seminole has tested themselves against out of state competition in non-district play and they’ll do it again this fall. They played teams from Louisiana and Texas last year. This is going to be a big test for the Chieftains and their non-district schedule is pretty tough.
Sept. 2 – Shawnee
Sept. 9 – AT Tecumseh
Sept. 16 – Harrah
Sept. 23 – AT Stigler
Sept. 30 – AT Checotah
Oct. 7 – Muldrow
Oct. 14 – AT Lincoln Christian
– In week seven, the Chieftains will hit the road for the biggest district game of the season. They’ll face off with 3A’s #1 team in the preseason in Lincoln Christian. Seminole hasn’t had much luck against the Bulldogs over the last few years but they’re hoping to turn things around this fall. If they can go to Tulsa and steal a win over the preseason favorite in Class 3A, they could put themselves in the driver’s seat to capture the district championship. Even a loss doesn’t put Seminole out of the playoff hunt but this is a big game.
Oct. 28 – AT Locust Grove
Nov. 4 – Berryhill
– A new district foe for the Chieftains this fall is Berryhill. They’ll wrap up the 2022 regular season at home against the Chiefs and this is going to be a big district match-up. These two perennial powers in Class 3A are familiar with one another after meeting in the playoffs but this game could decide who goes to to the playoffs. Or at the very least, who is what seed within the playoffs. A home playoff game could be on the line here so both teams will be treating like the playoffs have started early as they head into week ten.
Notable
Head coach Mike Snyder is ready to enter year number 43 as Seminole’s head coach. He was hired back in 1980 and has become the face of Seminole football. In 1999, Snyder was inducted into the Oklahoma Coaches Association Hall Of Fame. 20 years later, in 2019, Snyder became the state’s all time winningest football coach. With a victory late in the 2019 season, Snyder captured his 364th career victory, overtaking the record that was held by Bruce Hendrickson. Snyder and longtime Sulphur head coach Jim Dixon are the only active head coaches who have over 300 career victories. Currently sitting at 379 victories, Snyder could be the first head coach in state history to reach 400 wins if he sticks around for a few more seasons.
