The defensive back group is tricky because it is a generalized classification of four different positions. Free safeties, strong safeties, cornerbacks, and nickel corners are placed under the same umbrella, even though they are different positions with position-specific techniques and responsibilities.
This article will briefly examine the top-ranked defensive backs from the class of 2024.
Rosenmeyer is an extremely impressive cornerback who possesses the skill, physicality, and mentality needed to line up across from any number one receiver and go to war. His 76-inch reach gives him the ability to keep roughly three feet between himself and the receiver when jamming while also giving him the reach to break up receptions. Rosenmeyer has been building relationships with some notable Division I programs while earning his spot as the top defensive back ranking for the class.
Robinson is a versatile athlete who lines up at safety but can fill every role in the defensive secondary. He has excellent footwork, which helps him to flow in coverage so he can scan the field to read the quarterback while staying aware of the receiving threats in his area. His physical playing style makes him a difficult defender to get around, especially for ball carriers, because of his willingness to initiate contact. Robinson is the second-ranked defensive back in the class, but he is the top-ranked safety among the incoming juniors.
Highlights
Coming in at third is Douglas, a technically sound cornerback with a promising future. The 6-foot-1, 180lbs corner has outstanding footwork with a reach that allows him to keep a comfortable distance between himself and his opponent. His eye discipline makes him a tricky corner to beat, especially when he is locked on his man. Douglas is another corner who can be matched up against any number one receiver and battle it out all game, making him a prospect worthy of being added to every recruiting board.
Pacheco is a ball-hawking defender who can move between safety and corner. His high motor and impressive instincts allow him to read the field and anticipate where the quarterback wants to go with the ball, enabling him to break on time and make a play on the ball. Pacheco is the type of player who will force takeaways and use his outstanding athleticism to pick up yards and put his offense in great positions. Keep a watchful eye out for this player; his ceiling is limitless.
Highlights
Wrapping up the top five is Shelp, a true lockdown cornerback who is coming off of a state title-winning sophomore season. He is still a bit raw, but he has fluid footwork, strong jams, and disciplined eyes. His ability to stay focused on the hips of the receiver while playing through the hands to disrupt catches is nothing short of impressive. Shelp has put in serious work this offseason to improve his craft, which will be needed now that the Chargers have jumped to the 5A classification. Shelp is a player worth keeping tabs on going forward.
