Now that I’ve had time to evaluate as many prospects as possible, I will start releasing my preseason offensive and defensive teams for specific areas in the state. To kick things off, I will focus on my hometown and area I know the best, Lexington. This is a growing city as far as football talent goes over the past several years but these are the players that stood out on the offensive side of the ball.
If I were to choose a Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, Cutter Boley Cutter Boley 6’5″ | 200 lbs | QB Lexington Christian Academy | 2024 State KY would be my selection. After transferring to Lexington Christian Academy this off-season, Boley has made a great first impression on me. He has incredible arm talent, showing the ability to throw the deep ball with a great amount of touch. Boley also does a great job of going through his progressions to find the open receiver. I have also been impressed by his accuracy as he is able to thread the needle and fit his passes in tight coverage where only his receiver can catch it. Cutter has a long list of Power 5 offers currently and I expect him to be able to go anywhere he’d like when it comes time to commit.
At the first running back spot, I have our ninth ranked player in the class of 2023, TJ Horton TJ Horton 5’10” | 175 lbs | RB Frederick Douglass | 2023 State KY . TJ has been very high on my radar this summer as a key piece of a very talented Frederick Douglass football team. He is a complete back with a great combination of vision, speed, elusiveness, and power. Once he sees the hole, he comes downhill in a hurry. When he gets to the second level, he either runs by defenders with his speed or makes them miss with quick cuts in the open field. He also has shown the ability to run straight through defenders on his way to the end zone. Horton is committed to Ball State and will look to finish off his senior year with a trip to Kroger Field for the State Championship.
The second running back on my list just recently jumped onto my radar when evaluating film. Walker Hall Walker Hall 5’11” | 205 lbs | RB Lexington Catholic | 2023 KY is a very gifted ball carrier that is coming off a solid junior season in which he received First Team All-District recognition. The first thing that stood out to me with Hall is his vision. He has the patience to let his blocks set up to create a running lane but once it opens, he comes downhill with a sense of urgency. Hall is a hard runner that keeps his legs churning and is very difficult to bring down on first contact. Once he hits the open field, good luck catching him as Hall shows off his track speed in his ability to run away from a defense. Walker currently holds offers from Kentucky Wesleyan and Centre College but I expect more to come as he can be a very good running back at the next level.
Moving to wide receiver, Cameron Dunn Cameron Dunn 5’10” | 175 lbs | WR Frederick Douglass | 2023 State KY is a player that recently caught my attention at a 7 on 7 tournament. The first thing that jumps out when you watch Dunn is his speed. He can run by opposing defensive backs in the deep passing game but also has the speed to catch a short pass and take it to the end zone at any given moment. After the catch, he is very hard for defenders to get wrapped up as he has impressive elusiveness. Dunn uses his quickness to make defenders look silly in the open field, leading to many missed tackles. Cameron currently holds offers from Kentucky Wesleyan and Eastern Kentucky, and I expect more to come as I believe he has the talent to play at the FCS level at the very least.
Another receiver that has jumped out to me this summer is junior Traevon Berry Traevon Berry 6’3″ | 185 lbs | WR Paul Laurence Dunbar | 2024 State KY from Dunbar. Berry is a long, athletic wide receiver that thrives on the outside. His speed helps him to pose as a very dangerous deep threat as he can simply run right by defenders to create separation. He also has tremendous hands and a high catch radius which helps him win in jump ball situations. If you need to throw the ball to the end zone and hope your receiver makes a play on the ball, Berry is your guy! While he doesn’t currently hold any offers, I expect his recruiting to heat up this season as Berry is a rising star in the state and I believe he has Division I potential.
Tylon Webb Tylon Webb 6’3″ | 185 lbs | WR Frederick Douglass | 2023 State KY is a receiver that has been very high on my radar this summer. He is another big, athletic wide receiver that does his damage on the outside. Webb uses his long strides to run by defenders to create separation in the deep passing game. Once he has the ball in his hands, he has a great second gear in him as he simply runs away from the defense. Webb is also a very physical blocker, sealing off his man and driving them down the field. Tylon has offers from Southeast Missouri State, Eastern Kentucky, and UT Martin, and I believe more could come as he has Division I talent.
Thomas Howard Thomas Howard 6’3″ | 215 lbs | TE Frederick Douglass | 2023 State KY is a name that is very well known in the recruiting circuit in the state of Kentucky. He is a big, athletic tight end that has success in everything that he is asked to do on the field. Howard is a very reliable blocker that creates movement down the field and does a great job of finding work in the open field as a lead blocker. In the passing game, he serves as a mismatch out of the slot as he provides a big target with very reliable hands and impressive athleticism. He has also shown the ability to get up the field and pick up yards after the catch. While he is committed to Louisville to play baseball, Howard could very easily play at a Power 5 football program as he does hold a football offer from Kentucky.
Moving over to the big fellas up front, Demeco Kennedy Demeco Kennedy 6’3″ | 270 lbs | DL Frederick Douglass | 2024 State KY is my top offensive lineman in the city and one of the best in the state. He is a physical, athletic offensive guard that creates movement off the line of scrimmage. Kennedy has a quick first step and drives through his man, finishing through the whistle. He also does a great job of getting to the second level when uncovered and finding work in the open field. Demeco currently holds offers from Miami (OH), Eastern Kentucky, Southeast Missouri State, Illinois, Louisville, Kentucky, Marshall, Toledo, Western Michigan, Ball State, and Ole Miss, and I expect that list to be even longer by the time he hits his senior year.
McKinney is another talented junior offensive lineman in Lexington that has been receiving a lot of attention from college coaches. He is a big, physical offensive tackle that has shown that he can play on both the left and right sides. McKinney is the definition of a mauler as he explodes out of his stance, drives his man, and finishes his blocks. He also shows a great ability to get up to the second level and is very reliable in pass protection. McKinney has also had some experience at center and long snapper so he has some versatility to move positions if needed. Garrison currently holds an offer from Eastern Kentucky but I expect more to come as I believe he has the ability to play at the FBS level.
The backfield at Frederick Douglass should feel very fortunate as they have two talented junior offensive linemen to run behind in Kennedy and Zuri Madison Zuri Madison 6’5″ | 280 lbs | OL Frederick Douglass | 2024 State KY . Madison lines up at right tackle and is at his best in pass protection. He has a very quick pass set with the ability to kick back and mirror opposing pass rushers. Madison also does a great job of using his length to get extension on his man. In the run game, Madison does a great job of getting to the second level and finishing blocks. Zuri currently holds offers from Toledo, Ball State, Marshall, Western Michigan, Southeast Missouri State, Eastern Kentucky, and Miami (OH), and I expect that list to grow as he has true Division I talent.
Next up on my list, I have the man in the middle for a very talented Lexington Catholic offense. Joe Schlarman Joe Schlarman 6’2″ | 245 lbs | OL Lexington Catholic | 2024 State KY lines up at center and does a great job of communicating pre-snap and picking up stunts. In pass pro, he does a great job of snapping the ball and getting a quick kick step and picking up his man. Schlarman is a mauler in the run game as he gets a quick first step while snapping the ball and drives his man down the field, finishing with pancake blocks very frequently. While he doesn’t hold any offers, I expect them to come sooner than later as he has been receiving a ton of college interest and has the skill set to be a great player at the next level.
My final offensive lineman is a lesser known name that needs to be receiving some attention. Gary McCauley Gary McCauley 6’3″ | 240 lbs | OL Bryan Station | 2024 State KY is a long, athletic offensive tackle that is a key piece to a Bryan Station team that is on the rise. He is very impressive in pass protection as he has a quick pass set and does a great job of mirroring opposing pass rushers. McCauley also has solid strength as he does a good job of getting inside position with his hands and using a strong grip to not let his man defeat his block easily. He is also reliable in the run game as he explodes out of his stance and creates movement off the line of scrimmage. While Gary doesn’t currently hold any offers, he should definitely see some come his way as he has received some interest and has the ability to play at the next level.
Damin Green Damin Green 5’10” | 180 lbs | ATH Bryan Station | 2023 State KY was one of my favorite players to watch film on this summer as he is simply electric with the ball in his hands. He lines up at receiver, running back, kick/punt returner, and even comes in as an extra defensive back. At receiver, he is a very gifted route runner, using quick breaks to create separation. After the catch, he is very shifty in the open field and also has the speed to run away from a defense. As a ball carrier, he has tremendous vision, finding the hole and coming downhill in a hurry. To put it simple, just put the ball in his hands and Green will make a play! Damin currently holds offers from Tennessee Tech, Eastern Kentucky, UT Martin, and Southeast Missouri State but I believe more schools should have their eyes on him as he has FBS level talent.
To finish things off, I have another player that has caught my eye as someone who can get the job done in many different ways. Noah Chapman Noah Chapman 5’11” | 180 lbs | ATH Paul Laurence Dunbar | 2023 State KY is a key piece to a very talented Dunbar offense as he is dangerous in the slot at receiver and out of the backfield as a ball carrier. As a receiver, he has great route running ability and has the toughness to make catches in the middle of the field through contact. Chapman also has incredible contested catch ability. He has the athleticism to go up and get jump balls and the hands to make very tough catches. As a ball carrier, Chapman has impressive vision and is a dangerous downhill runner that is tough to bring down on first contact. He also shows solid elusiveness and speed in the open field which help him pick up big plays very frequently. Noah currently holds an offer from Union College but I believe more will come as he has the talent to be a special player at the next level.
