August 25th – Bixby VS Owasso (@ TU’s Chapman Stadium)
What a way to kick off the season. Bixby and Owasso will square off on a Thursday night at TU’s Chapman Stadium in a showdown that has been named the “Battle Of The Burbs”. The Spartans bring in their 49-game winning streak and this will be their first game in 6A-1 while Owasso is trying to climb the mountain once again. This is a semifinal or even championship-quality match-up and we’re getting it in week zero. The added fact that the game will be on Thursday night and they’ll get more attention is a big plus.
September 9th – Jenks At Union & Owasso AT Broken Arrow
Week two has gotten a big “Rivalry Week” feel to it over the last few years and this year is no different. And two of the bigger rivalry games in the Tulsa area include four of the five Tulsa powers in 6A-1 as Jenks will hit the road to take on nemesis Union and Owasso will travel to Broken Arrow. Not only will these two rivals face off, but they’re also rematches of the playoffs last year. Broken Arrow ended Owasso’s season in the first round while Jenks captured their second straight title at the expense of their rival Union.
September 23rd – Union AT Owasso
Owasso and Union are the top two teams in the district as we head into the season so when Owasso welcomes in the Redhawks in week four to open up district play, it’s not crazy to think that the district championship could be on the line. Union knocked off the Rams a year ago and would end up winning the district title. These two teams have faced off in week four several years in a row now. It’s a unique match-up considering it’s only week four, there are six more district games left but this one could decide the district crown.
October 7th – Mustang AT Edmond Santa Fe
While Owasso and Union might be the favorites in that district going into the season, Edmond Santa Fe and Mustang are certainly going to have something to say about that. In week six, these two teams will face off and the winner has to be considered the “best from the west” in 6A-1 this fall. Both Mustang and Santa Fe have proven they can compete with the top dogs in their district. The winner will still have their district title hopes in tact while the loser will be in danger of falling all the way to the four seed or even out of the playoffs.
November 3rd – Jenks AT Bixby
We know that the scheduling of district match-ups and where they fall on the calendar is completely random but man does this one feel just right. The Spartans will welcome in the Trojans in a battle between defending state champions. Both expect to be the top team in the district and this week ten clash could end up deciding that district champion. A big question will be whether or not Bixby’s winning streak is still in tact. These two are very familiar with one another after playing non-district play for years. Now the stakes get raised quite a bit.
Notable Storylines
Bixby’s Winning Streak
The Bixby Spartans moving up to 6A-1 after absolutely dominating 6A-2 over the last eight years would be a storyline to follow but throw in the fact that the Spartans have won 49 games in a row and you have one of the top storylines in Oklahoma, regardless of class. Bixby set the record for consecutive wins by an 11-man program with their state championship victory over Deer Creek in December. With the move up to 6A-1, the Spartans will certainly be tested week after week and that winning streak will be on the line. How high the streak will get is something that we’ll follow along with throughout the season. Will it end in week zero when they clash with Owasso or will they finish off another perfect season this fall and extend that winning streak to 62 wins in a row? The streak will come to an end at some point. The biggest question will be when.
East-West Gap
This has been easily the biggest storyline going into every football season for about two decades now. Class 6A and starting in 2014, 6A-1, has been dominated by the Tulsa-area schools. Broken Arrow, Jenks, Owasso and Union have won every championship since 1996. The majority of those being won by Jenks and Union. Now with Bixby moving up to 6A-1, the “Big Four” becomes a “Big Five” and it’s another hurdle for the west side teams to jump over to contend for a title. We’ve seen Edmond Santa Fe make a run to the title game recently. Mustang pushed eventual champion Jenks in the semifinal a year ago. But we’re still waiting for that west side team to finally get the job done and raise the gold ball over their heads. There is still a gap between the two sides of the state. I’ve stated in the past that I believe the gap is not as large as it once was. But with the addition of Bixby, that mountain just got a little taller to climb.
Jenks-Union Rivalry Getting Hotter
One of the biggest storylines in 6A-1 this offseason was the big news in late May when 2025 quarterback Shaker Reisig Shaker Reisig 6'0" | 185 lbs | QB Union | 2025 State OK moved from Jenks to Union. After helping lead the Trojans to a state championship as a freshman, Reisig made the headline-grabbing move. Reisig’s first start came against Union last fall and when the two meet again in week two, this match-up will have a little more heat to it. Part of what made the Reisig move so crazy was the timeline of events. On a Thursday during spring drills, Reisig was practicing with Jenks. The following day, Reisig was with Union at their team camp at Owasso. While he didn’t participate, he was with the Redhawks throughout the morning as part of the team. This storyline certainly had some heat in late May and early June and will have even more heat when the two teams face off in September.
