September 2nd – Del City AT Booker T Washington
In week one, we’ll see two marquee match-ups in 6A-2 and we’ll start in Tulsa as Booker T Washington will host Del City. This used to be a 6A-2 match-up but with Del City moving down to Class 5A, this won’t have as much significance in the big picture of 6A-2. And this is still going to be one of the best games of week and these two teams have gotten used to playing some very competitive games. Whether it’s a shootout our a defensive battle, these two always play close contests and there will be plenty of talent on display when these two teams square off.
September 2nd – Edmond Santa Fe AT Choctaw
On the same night that Booker T Washington hosts Del City, #1 Choctaw will host Edmond Santa Fe. The Yellowjackets play one of the tougher non-district schedules among the 6A-2 squads and this will be a tough test before the enter district play. The Yellowjackets will know exactly where they are when it comes to being a contender as they face off against a strong Edmond Santa Fe team and specifically a tough Santa Fe defense. If the Yellowjackets can get out of week one with a win and look impressive doing it, the Yellowjackets will prove that they’re a top contender in 6A-2.
September 23rd – Muskogee AT Sand Springs
In the first week of district play, we’ll have a showdown in the east side district that will definitely have playoff seeding implications. Sand Springs will host Muskogee. And while Booker T Washington and Stillwater appear to be the favorites in this district going into the season, the Roughers and Sandites are going to also be in the mix and could end up pulling an upset or two and competing for the district crown. But before they can do that, they have to win the district opener when they face each other. The loser will have to fight to earn their way into the playoffs.
September 30th – Stillwater AT Booker T Washington
In week five, we get a top three showdown as #2 Booker T Washington will host #3 Stillwater. It will be interesting to see if either team is still in that ranking spot in week five or if they’ve moved up. The Hornets will host the Pioneers and the district championship could be decided as the season reaches the halfway mark and September comes to a close. The Hornets will definitely have this game circled after they went to Stillwater in the first round a season ago and came up short. This will be a tough district so a loss could cost that team down the stretch.
October 7th – Deer Creek AT Choctaw
Meanwhile in the west side district, the top two teams going into the season are Choctaw and Deer Creek. So when these two teams meet in week six, the district championship could very well be decided in this head to head match-up. When the Antlers and Yellowjackets face off, we’ll see a rematch of last year’s first round in the 6A-2 postseason. Deer Creek went on the road and stunned Choctaw and would eventually make it all the way to the state title game. Both teams expect to make a run this fall but they have to take care of business here first.
Notable Storylines
Bye Bye Bixby
As Bixby walked off the turf at UCO with their seventh state championship in eight years, a new era officially begun in Class 6A-2. The Spartans have moved up to 6A-1 and it’s a safe bet that with their enrollment continuing to grow, they’ll stay in 6A-1 for good. That opens the door for teams to not only realistically contend in 6A-2 but we’ll crown new champions. Booker T Washington is the only other team to win a 6A-2 title after winning it all in 2017. Other programs like Choctaw and Stillwater have knocked on the door, making it to the title game but had to settle for silver. Then you have programs on the rise like Deer Creek, Muskogee and Sand Springs that have all had success in the last eight years but are looking to become consistent contenders. With the Spartans now in 6A-1, the landscape in 6A-2 is completely different. The top three teams in our preseason rankings, Choctaw, Booker T Washington and Stillwater all come in as the favorites this fall but one thing is for sure and 6A-2 is going to be more wide open than ever before.
Gauntlet District
While 6A-2 is going to be more wide open than ever before, the east side district of 6A-2 is going to be an absolute gauntlet. Four of the top six teams in our preseason rankings are all in the same district. Booker T Washington, Muskogee, Sand Springs and Stillwater are all looking to become contenders this fall. Then you also have teams like Bartlesville and Tahlequah who have plenty of talent back and are trending in the right direction. Last season, we saw this district as one of the top districts in the state. For example, the four seed was Sand Springs. They would go on the road and knock off district champion Del City in the first round. One of these teams is going to end up being the four seed and they will certainly not be your typical four seed, similar to Sand Springs last season. Booker T Washington and Stillwater are the favorites but they’ll have plenty of competition week in and week out.
New Blood
We mentioned Tahlequah and the Tigers are one of three new teams into 6A-2 this fall. In addition to Tahlequah, Capitol Hill and Putnam City are new to the class and will be playing in the west side district. Putnam City comes in and immediately becomes a playoff contender. In addition to seeing a new state champion crowned this fall, 6A-2 is in the unique position where we’ll see completely new district champions. Bixby and Del City both captured the district crowns last season. And with Bixby in 6A-1 and Del City moving down to Class 5A, we’ll see new teams emerge as the district champs this fall. We already talked about the east side district, Choctaw and Deer Creek are the top two teams in the west side district. But Lawton, Ponca City and Putnam City will make things interesting. While the east side district appears to be one of the tougher districts in the state, the competition in the west side district will be intense as well, week in and week out. A new chapter of 6A-2 football is about to begin with the 2022 football season.
