Five Louisiana prospects made particularly lofty debuts in this week’s Louisiana update, as high as a top-20 player at a premium position.
Tyler Johnson Tyler Johnson 6'8" | 300 lbs | OL Natchitoches Central | 2023 State LA — 6-8, 300 OL — Natchitoches Central
Johnson didn’t start garnering as much attention as some of his peers until the heels of his junior season, but his athleticism and massive frame make him one of the state’s top tackle prospects in the class. Texas Tech extended his first scholarship offer in February, with Tulane, Louisiana Tech, Louisiana (Lafayette), ULM, Baylor, Memphis, Missouri, Houston, Kansas State, Liberty, South Florida, Arkansas State, Grambling State and Northwestern State among others to follow since then.
Carl Williams IV Carl Williams IV 6'0" | 170 lbs | DB Southern Lab | 2023 State LA — 6-0, 170 DB — Southern Lab
The three-phase standout for the state champion Kittens showed his toughness and character late this past season as he rehabbed diligently enough to return from injury in time to help his team put an exclamation mark of a title game on a memorable season. And the speedy, aggressive athlete has cemented himself as one of Louisiana’s top prospects and a clear Power Five talent. Williams gets his hands quickly into opposing receivers in press coverage, reads and blankets routes and makes impact plays when the ball is in the air. He committed to Baylor in June over offers from Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi State, Missouri and Vanderbilt among others.
Christian Martin Christian Martin 6'6" | 260 lbs | OL Destrehan | 2023 State LA — 6-6, 260 OL — Destrehan
The Wildcats’ defensive backs and wide receivers have headlined the program’s talented 2023 class for much of their high school career, but Martin and fellow lineman Landry Cannon Landry Cannon 6'3" | 345 lbs | OL Destrehan | 2023 State LA have developed into two of the best. Martin is light on his feet to beat rushers to their attempted angles or get to the downfield in front of screen plays with his long, lean frame he should be able to smoothly bulk up at the next level. Mississippi State, Louisiana Tech, Louisiana (Lafayette) and Houston extended offers early this spring before a late-June commitment to Colorado State.
Macho Stevenson Macho Stevenson 6'0" | 170 lbs | ATH Captain Shreve | 2023 State LA — 6-0, 170 ATH — Captain Shreve
The multisport, multiphase standout is an All-American and Junior Olympian on the track with blazing 10.59-second 100-meter, 21.51-second 200-meter and 47.18-second 400-meter speed that would make a handful on the football field stretching opposing defenses vertically as a receiver or covering major ground quickly as a defensive back. Stevenson earned a dual offer from Texas Tech in March and committed in June, but has become a fast-rising LSU target to watch with a track offer in June and increasing attention from the football staff heading into his senior season.
Tre’Darius Brown Tre’Darius Brown 6'4" | 310 lbs | DL Natchitoches Central | 2023 State LA — 6-4, 310 DL — Natchitoches Central
Brown initially landed on Prep Redzone’s 2023 watch list as an underclassman offensive lineman, but earns his first ranking — in a top-50 position at that — following a breakout junior year as a versatile defensive lineman. The big-bodied athlete was a strong and tenacious disrupter lined up anywhere from over center out to well wide of tackle. His first offer came from Texas Tech in February, and he committed in April. He currently holds other offers from Louisiana (Lafayette), Tulane, Northwestern State and Missouri.
