Segment One of the McDonald’s Kickoff Classic is slated for Thursday night at Byrnes High School, with Dorman playing Rock Hill in the opening game, and Byrnes squaring off with Chester in the nightcap.
The event, sponsored by the District 2 Football Officials’ Association, will serve as the first of two in the area. On Aug. 12, Gaffney will host part two of the Classic, with Boiling Springs playing Southside and Gaffney taking on Independence in two-quarter jamboree action.
Thursday’s event will feature a number of players who should be on everyone’s radar as the season begins. Here’s a look at four who jump off the film.
Byrnes’ Miquel Dingle Miquel Dingle 6'2" | 210 lbs | LB Byrnes | 2023 State SC is a legit D1 player, and has a commitment to Texas Tech to back it up. Dingle has track-star speed, great football instincts, and a physical nature that makes him an ideal fit in the Rebels’ scheme. Dingle was lost to an injury late in the season last year, but has had a phenomenal summer and seems primed for a breakout year.
Chester’s Trooper Floyd saw some action in relief of Zan Dunham at QB a year ago, but the reins of the Cyclones’ offense are now firmly in his hands. He’s not a big, physical bruiser like Dunham was, but he has a big arm and good accuracy, and the Cyclones will likely toss it around more to take advantage of Floyd’s talents.
Dorman is transitioning to a new offense under new head coach Dustin Curtis, and it will be interesting to see how the Cavaliers utilize Demarius Foster Demarius Foster 5'9" | 160 lbs | RB Dorman | 2023 State SC . Foster was the team’s leading rusher a year ago, and he’s an adept receiver out of the backfield as well. With good hands and the ability to make defenders miss in space in both facets of the offense, Foster could put up some big numbers.
Junior QB Matthew Wilson Matthew Wilson 6'1" | 200 lbs | QB Rock Hill | 2024 State SC is expected to lead Rock Hill. Wilson has a wealth of talent around him at the skill positions and a senior-heavy offensive line – and he’s also pretty dang good. He has a strong arm and solid pocket presence, and doesn’t give up on the play, but when it’s time to move he can hurt you with his legs as well.
