But before we get there, a number of scrimmages will be worth some of your preseason time. In each of these mock games, one if not both teams already have one scrimmage under their belt. So we should see the continued development of potential stars in the making, or – at worst – some previously known big names put on a show.
FRIDAY, AUGUST 5
Cane Bay at South Florence – Cane Bay has a top-75 overall player in linebacker Cameron Avery Cameron Avery 6'0" | 220 lbs | LB Cane Bay | 2023 State SC , and the chance to see him doing his thing against LaNorris Sellers LaNorris Sellers 6'3" | 215 lbs | QB South Florence | 2023 State SC and the rest of this fast-paced Bruins’ offense could be something.
MONDAY, AUGUST 8
West Florence at Dillon – West Florence will get a still test, and that’s exactly what coach Jody Jenerette wants for his linebacking crew of Kelvin Hunter Kelvin Hunter 6'1" | 185 lbs | DB West Florence | 2024 State SC , Nahson Frison, Franklin Emerson and Da’Shun Scott.
Conway at Wilson – Receivers will be all over the field in this one, as Wilson’s Zandae Butler Zandae Butler 6'1" | 195 lbs | WR Wilson | 2023 State SC , Jyron Waiters Jyron Waiters 5'11" | 180 lbs | WR Wilson | 2024 State SC and Donnell Williamson Donnell Williamson 5'11" | 170 lbs | ATH Catawba Ridge | 2023 State SC will be countered by Conway’s Aiden Brantley, Chris Quick and Derek Grant Derek Grant 6'1" | 175 lbs | WR Conway | 2024 State SC .
Wando at Myrtle Beach – After the Seahawks lost to Loris in their first scrimmage, we’ll get to see what type of adjustments the offense and incoming quarterback Tre Dunn and returner Wyatt Cannon can make.
Waccamaw at Socastee – The Warriors have one of the biggest quarterbacks in their region in 6-foot-2, 190-pound Jaret Yonker, as well as one of the biggest offensive linemen, all 6-foot-4, 300 pounds of Jackson Mattox, protecting him. Playing a Class 5A opponent here will only help two of Waccamaw’s better offensive threats get better.
Hartsville at Ridge View – Another Pee Dee squad will head to the Midlands on Monday, and a Hartsville offense led by tailbacks Carmello McDaniel Carmello McDaniel 5'8" | 175 lbs | RB Hartsville | 2024 State SC and J’Shawn Anderson J’Shawn Anderson 6'0" | 185 lbs | RB Hartsville | 2023 State SC and quarterback McKendrie Douglas McKendrie Douglas 6'3" | 195 lbs | QB Hartsville | 2024 State SC will go up against a Ridge View team that just got pulled down from Class 5A after two pretty successful seasons.
FRIDAY, AUGUST 12
CNB Kickoff Classic (CCU’s Brooks Stadium) – The annual 10-team scrimmage will highlight each of Horry County’s nine programs and nearby Waccamaw. (More specifics on this event Tuesday morning.)
West Florence at Brookland-Cayce – While this one will be played in the Midlands, it features an interesting quarterback dual between B-C’s Tanner Staton Tanner Staton 6'2" | 205 lbs | QB Brookland-Cayce | 2023 State SC and West’s Deuce Hudson Deuce Hudson 6'0" | 165 lbs | QB West Florence | 2023 State SC . These two combined for 4,100 total yards and 26 touchdowns last season.
