Not every first-year player gets the opportunity to step onto the field under the varsity lights. For those who could get reps with varsity, gaining recognition early on was an easier task than it may have been for others. However, a lack of varsity reps does not mean a lack of talent.
As the list of incoming sophomores continues to grow, the current focus is to shine a light on the talented young players who have impressed onlookers during the past calendar year.
This article will briefly examine the top ten-ranked players in the 2025 class.
Landing the top spot is Jordan Rechel Jordan Rechel 5'11" | 165 lbs | WR Fairview | 2025 State CO , Fairview’s star player who led all freshmen in the state—6th nationally—in receiving yards (845) and touchdowns (10) last season. Rechel was half of one of the more dynamic QB/WR duos in the 2025 class on a national level, helping him land a Division I offer from Colorado. Rechel will have a different QB this fall, but he will look to pick up where he left off last season without skipping a beat.
Coming in second on the list is reigning 5A state champion Aiden Knapke Aiden Knapke 6'0" | 190 lbs | DB Cherry Creek | 2025 State CO , from Cherry Creek. This outstanding safety checks all of the boxes as a member of arguably the best defense in the state. He has a physical playing style built upon solid techniques, allowing him to keep the skies clear against the pass and come downhill to lay devastating hits against the run. Knapke has earned his way onto the radars of a few D1 programs, making him a young player to invest in early.
Austyn Modrzewski Austyn Modrzewski 6'5" | 205 lbs | QB Mountain Vista | 2025 State CO from Mountain Vista is the top-ranked QB and third overall player in the class. The young shot-caller is perhaps one of the most poised QBs in the state who displays an advanced understanding of the game and where to go with the football. He completed 119 of his 168 pass attempts for 1,502 yards and 15 touchdowns while splitting reps with a senior last season. Now that the helm is all his, the Golden Eagles are on track to become a serious playoff contender this fall.
Securing the fourth slot is Fairview linebacker, Brock Kolstad Brock Kolstad 6'0" | 215 lbs | LB Fairview | 2025 State CO . In his debut season, Kolstad lined up at the defensive end position to help his team by bringing pressure from the edge. During the offseason, his work ethic has transformed him into one of the more dominant inside linebackers in the state. Kolstad will be an integral part of the defense for the Knights, making him a must-know player.
Sealing out the top five is defensive linemen Kafui B. Fiadonu Kafui B. Fiadonu 6'3" | 240 lbs | DL D'Evelyn | 2025 State CO from D’Evelyn. His explosive speed and dominant power allow him to go through would-be blockers and wreak havoc in the backfield. He is a disruptive force that lines up as an interior lineman, but he has the attributes that enable him to play from just about anywhere on the front. Fiadonu is an outstanding player who has earned an offer from CSU Pueblo, expect him to be a top prospect in the class.
The sixth-ranked spot belongs to Eaton LB Gunnar Clary Gunnar Clary 6'2" | 200 lbs | DL Eaton | 2025 State CO , while Smoky Hill offensive lineman Bailey Bujanda Bailey Bujanda 6'3" | 280 lbs | OL Smoky Hill | 2025 State CO has snagged the 7th slot. Cary will be entering his sophomore year after having a productive debut season that ended with a 2A state championship title and a wrestling state title. Bujanda comes in as the top-ranked OL in the class who has already received interest from programs like UNLV and Oklahoma.
Closing out the top ten is Chatfield athlete Brock Narva Brock Narva 5'11" | 180 lbs | ATH Chatfield | 2025 State CO (8th), Horizon QB Alex Birch Alex Birch 5'10" | 180 lbs | QB Horizon | 2025 State CO (9th), and Pine Creek QB Cameron Cooper Cameron Cooper 6'1" | 180 lbs | QB Pine Creek | 2025 State CO (10th). Narva is a two-way starter who played a significant part in helping his team finish as the 4A state champions. Birch is a rising QB who, despite having a tough season, completed last year as one of the most improved passers in the state. Cooper is a young phenom who stepped into a playoff game late in the season after an injury suffered by the senior starter and led his team to victory through the first two rounds of the postseason.
