We are listing the top programs in the state and identifying the players within them. Here are the Virginia 6A Preseason State Rankings
1. Oscar Smith High School
2021 Record: 13-1
The 2021 6A State Champions appear to still be loaded, and haven’t lost a step. The offense put up gaudy number averaging close to 48 points per game. Receivers Tory Johnson, Jamauri Knox Jamauri Knox 5'9" | 160 lbs | WR Oscar Smith | 2024 State VA , Offensive Linemen Tajh Boyd Tajh Boyd 6'5" | 315 lbs | OL Oscar Smith | 2023 State VA , Brock Stukes Brock Stukes 6'2" | 280 lbs | OL Oscar Smith | 2023 State VA , and QB Cade Cox will lead one of the most explosive offenses in the state. LB Robbie Jones Robbie Jones 5'11" | 190 lbs | LB Oscar Smith | 2023 State VA , Kam Johnson Kam Johnson 6'0" | 215 lbs | RB North Cross | 2024 State VA , DB Asad Brown, and DL Ocatavion Taylor lead a defense that only gave up an average of 8 points a game and pitched 7 shutouts last year.
2. Battlefield High School
2021 Record: 13-1
The Bobcats made it to the State Semi-Final before losing to the eventual champion, Oscar Smith. There offense led by RB Jelon Johnson Jelon Johnson 6'0" | 185 lbs | DB Battlefield | 2023 State VA , Wr Braden Boggs, Ol Jayden Perez Jayden Perez 6'4" | 260 lbs | OL Battlefield | 2023 State VA , and OL David Smoot David Smoot 6'0" | 255 lbs | OL Battlefield | 2023 VA averaged over 31 points per game this past fall. On the defensive side of the ball, DL Ty Gordon Ty Gordon 6'2" | 270 lbs | DL Battlefield | 2023 State VA , DB Caleb Woodson Caleb Woodson 6'3" | 200 lbs | DB Battlefield | 2023 State VA , and DB Damiere Minkah led Battlefield to an average of less than 14 points per game and 7 games where they only allowed 7 points or less last season.
3. Centreville High School
2021 Record: 10-2
Centreville made it to the State Quarterfinals last season before losing to the State Runner- Up, James Madison. They return on of the state’s top Running Backs, Isaiah Ragland Isaiah Ragland 5'9" | 195 lbs | RB Centreville | 2023 State VA , who will have the luxury of Offensive Linemen Wesley Howenstein and Zachary Pekich returning to open holes. Together the Wildcats boast on of the state’s top rushing attacks, an offense that averaged 29 points per game, and scored 35 or more points 7 times. DL Gent Velzi Gent Velzi 6'1" | 290 lbs | DL Centreville | 2023 State VA , LB Brian Bates Jr, LB Adam Badi Adam Badi 5'11" | 205 lbs | LB Centreville | 2024 State VA , and Zachary Charles return to lead a stout defense that gave up only 14.4 points per game in 2021.
4. James Madison High School
2021 Record: 13-2
James Madison finished as the 6A State Runner- Up, losing to Oscar Smith in the State Championship. Led by Wide Receiver Cord Yates Cord Yates 5'9" | 160 lbs | WR James Madison | 2024 State VA , the offense averaged 33.6 points per game and scored over 30 points in 11 of the 15 games they played in last season. The Warhawks have lost some guys due to graduation, but return a defensive unit that gave up an average of less than 10 points last year.
5. Western Branch High School
2021 Record: 10-3
Western Branch was eliminated in the State Quarterfinals last year by Oscar Smith. However the Bruins return one of the state’s deadliest offensive trios in RB Shimmique Blizzard, WR Paul Billups Paul Billups 6'2" | 185 lbs | WR Western Branch | 2023 State VA , and QB Taquan Trotman Taquan Trotman 6'2" | 175 lbs | QB Western Branch | 2023 State VA . The offensive unit averaged close to 25 points per game, and have had an additional year to mature together. The defense only allowed an average of 16.6 points per game last year. If they can maintain that defensive production the Bruins will be a force to reckon with.
