Because so many games this week are important for district and regional seeding when the playoffs start in November, you will see some marquee games from all over Florida.
As there are some Top 25 matchups, there are also contests that will showcase and spotlight programs that are not ranked by truly have the talent to get the well-deserved exposure.
While we understand that there are so many Week 5 games to check out, we picked out 10 – like we do each week – for you to check out:
No. 17 Fort Lauderdale Dillard (3-1) at No. 1 Miami Central (3-0), Saturday, Traz Powell Stadium, 7:00. Here is a game that has drawn plenty of attention – as both sides have been doing plenty of talking and posturing. The Panthers had hoped to come into this game unbeaten, but No. 2 Hollywood Chaminade-Madonna knocked them off in the second week. The Rockets have been extremely impressive, using the win at IMG as a game that gives them the right to believe that they can compete against ANYONE in the country.
No. 6 Sanford Seminole (4-0) at No. 24 Venice (1-2), 7:00. Before the season began, the Indians made no bones about having one of the top schedules in the state, and while they have competed and played hard, did they bit off a little more than they could chew? They will have another test this week as one of the state’s elite programs comes in for a huge game. Venice could watch their entire season turn around with a win.
No. 10 Tampa Jesuit (2-1) at Seffner Armwood (3-1), 7:00. With time to recover from the loss to state-rated Miami Christopher Columbus, the Tigers are ready to stay on the road with a game against a team that still has much to prove. This game will answer a lot of questions for both talented teams. Expect a full house in Seffner.
Apopka (2-1) at No. 13 Orlando Edgewater (4-0), 7:00. No hiding the fact that this game is going to be one of the most intriguing for central Florida football fans. The defending 8A state runner up Blue Darters have gotten off to a slow start, just getting by a few opponents, while the Eagles have soared to new heights with some huge victories. This could be one of those games you may want to attend!
No. 14 Gainesville Buchholz (4-0) at Ocala Vanguard (3-1), 7:00. For North Florida football fans, this may be a game that you may want to catch – as Vanguard looks to get a big win and thrust themselves back into the spotlight – while the Bobcats want to silence those who believe they are not one of elite programs. Expect a lot of impressive football to be played in Ocala.
Kissimmee Osceola (2-2) at No. 16 Rockledge (4-0). To say that the Kowboys are one of the best .500 teams in the state is an understatement. The schedule they have played has been amazing, and a win against the Raiders on the road can certainly change the season around. Speaking about Rockledge, this has been one of the most dominating teams in Florida over the first four weeks – and another win will keep them on a path to become an elite program.
Harmony (3-0) at Eau Gallie (4-0), 7:00. Two programs who are looking for that statewide publicity and a chance to break the Top 25 soon will meet in a game that has plenty at stake. Two well coached programs with plenty of talent will clash in game that will produce just one unbeaten team late Friday evening. Could definitely be worth checking out this game if you are in the area.
Mitchell (3-1) at Bushnell South Sumter (4-0), 7:00. This could be a very entertaining contest between two teams who do not get the respect they deserve. The Mustangs have been as consistent as anyone in the Nature Coast region the past four seasons, and despite losing once, a win against a rising program can really make a statement. The Raiders have been waiting a long time for a spotlight game like this win as Bushnell gets set for a big Friday night.
Madison County (2-2) at Tallahassee Florida High (4-0), 7:00. This is one of those games where you have two of the strongest teams in the region squaring off like they have the past few years. Madison County with a new head coach that knows what a game like this can do for the Cowboys – while Florida High wants to stay unbeaten and make another push into the state playoffs in November.
Tallahassee North Florida Christian (4-0) at Valwood, Georgia (4-0), 7:00. In the battle of unbeatens, the Eagles head on the road to visit the six-time state champions to show that what has happened so far in 2022 is just part of the process to becoming one of the state powers – like were back in the late 90’s and early 2000’s. Talent on both sides of the ball and a matchup that is being talked about in northern Florida and southern Georgia.
