Team Preview
Cardinal Hayes only returns six total starters on both sides of the ball, one of the most significant roster turnovers in all of New York State. Of those six, only Center Juan Diaz is a Senior. You could say this is a full fledge youth movement at Cardinal Hayes. With the loss of star quarterback Henry Belin IV to Duke University, we see Cardinal Hayes rely on his top receiver and younger brother Rich Belin to transition behind center. Belin showed last year as a wide receiver and a few games as a safety that he will always be one of the best players on the field, regardless of where he lines up. Hayes putting the ball in his hands every play could spell great success. However, that success will likely come with headaches as Belin is still only a sophomore.
While Hayes and Coach Kyle Amann will work through the youth of the offense, Hayes may be a little more ready to go in the trenches on the other side of the ball. Seniors Teddy Holland and Dylan Mean man are on the outside, while Sophomores Blake Belin and Kahmari Valentine move the inside. These four could be the top defensive line unit in the Catholic AAA division. Valentine and Holland are proven in the League, having solid seasons last year. However, Means and Belin will have to take that next step for this group to flourish.
Who are some sleeper prospects for Cardinal Hayes? Well, let’s start with the entire receiving corps. With Belin moving to the quarterback, Cardinal Hayes is down their top five receivers from last season. Taifah Mason Taifah Mason 5'8" | 140 lbs | WR Cardinal Hayes | 2023 State NY looks to take a massive step as a speedy playmaker and the only player who registered receptions on last year’s team. However, a few sleeper names could become some threats for Cardinal Hayes. Markus Faucett, Cleveland Charlton, and Elijah Ford bring some necessary length outside the field. Standing 6’5, I think Charlton is a dark horse to become a favorite target of Belin early on in the season. One sleeper to keep an eye on is TE/WR Reid Jones, sporting an offer to UCONN and could develop with Belin as the season progresses. While a lot will be talked about the roster turnover of Cardinal Hayes they look to have the athletes necessary to not experience any drop off in performance.
