Quinn Schambow, Libertyville’s sophomore quarterback, started the game red hot from the pocket after throwing three first-quarter touchdowns. The first touchdown was a 30-yard strike up the sideline to Luke Nikolich. Kristan Gavric would be the recipient of the following two touchdown passes, including one that went 92-yards to the house.
Libertyville scored early and often but was held in check for the rest of the game after scoring 22 points in the first quarter. Outside of the big plays given up, Lake Forest did a pretty good job on defense. They had multiple 4th-down stops and held Libertyville scoreless for three quarters after they lit the scoreboard up at the beginning of the game. Lake Forest’s issue was on offense; their inability to move the ball and sustain drives is why they came out on the losing end of this matchup. Their only points came in the fourth quarter after Graham Garrigan found the endzone on a 16-yard rush.
Libertyville (2-2) heads to Waukegan (0-3) this week to try and get above .500 for the first time this season. Lake Forest (1-3) will host Zion-Benton and attempt to get their second win of the season.
Let’s look at which players had standout performances in this conference matchup…
I featured Gavric in an article a while back which highlighted Lake County’s top pass catchers to keep an eye on. After seeing him live in action this past Friday, I’m reassured that the senior wideout is without a doubt one of the top pass catchers in Lake County. He had over 100 yards receiving and two touchdowns in the first quarter, one of his touchdown receptions went 92-yards and was the unanimous play of the game. He’s a playmaker at the receiver position who can run solid routes, catch the ball well, and pile up the YAC
Highlights
Cole Matulenko | DL | 2023
Talk about being disruptive! Matulenko was unblockable and wreaked absolute havoc on Lake Forest’s offensive line. It seemed like he was apart of every tackle Libertyville recorded. Plays the game with a level of physicality that is often unmatched and possess a motor that’s nonstop. Easily the best defensive player on the field the entire night.
Charlie True | RB | 2023
True is a patient and decisive runner with good speed to attack the edges. Although he didn’t find the end zone, he was more than productive throughout the game and was able to move the chains on the ground and through the air. His ability to catch the ball adds to his versatility out of the backfield.
Quin Schambow | QB | 2025
I would have never guessed Schambow was a sophomore by the way he was slinging the ball around in the first half. He came out on fire and threw for three touchdowns in the first quarter. He has a live arm and looked extremely poised in the pocket. The fact that he doesn’t graduate until 2025 means Libertyville has an extremely promising future on the gridiron.
