I’m featuring 7 must-see matchups that will capture the eyes and hearts of thousands of athletes and fans this weekend, and I’m sure to be at one of these matchups. So without further note, here are the 7 must-watch Grand Rapids Area games of Week 6!
East Kentwood @ Caledonia
On paper, Caledonia should win this game, but East Kentwood is no joke, and they seem to be on a path to renewed success.
It will be a battle of the Quarterbacks with EK’s Casey Joppie Casey Joppie 6'1" | 180 lbs | QB East Kentwood | 2024 State MI facing off against Caledonia’s Mason Mckenzie Mason Mckenzie 6'0" | 170 lbs | QB Caledonia | 2023 State MI . Both QBs have been very impressive so far this season, and both have a good amount of weapons to give the ball to. Derek Pennington, Jimmie Floyd Jimmie Floyd 5'8" | 150 lbs | DB Caledonia | 2023 MI , Corey Mitchell, and Nathan Cobbs.
Byron Center @ East Grand Rapids
A great OK-White matchup that features two teams who have improved throughout the season.
Byron Center will be favored in this one, led by Hunter Schichtel, Brady Breit Brady Breit 6'2" | 180 lbs | DB Byron Center | 2023 MI , and Jason Sevigny Jason Sevigny 5'11" | 175 lbs | LB Byron Center | 2023 MI . They’re an experienced team led by an experienced coaching staff, and I expect them to be a playoff team.
It’s been a strange season for EGR, as they’ve had a grueling strength of schedule but have two good wins against Northview and their rival, Grand Rapids Christian. I’m interested in seeing the outcome of this game, and I think this Josh Shattuck led program is going to make strides in the coming years.
West Ottawa @ Grand haven
I expect this to be a close game featuring two programs looking to earn more recognition. Look for young talent to lead the way for these two teams.
Catholic Central @ South Christian
Both of these teams are undefeated and haven’t played a close team all season. Although CC won 28-7 last year, I expect this to be a competitive game with two programs that could make it to Ford Field. This is a game I’m considering attending.
Muskegon @ Union
Union has been extremely impressive this season, while Muskegon has been performing as expected. This is a great measuring stick game for Union, and I think this could be a much closer game than many think. If Union and Tommy Stevens Tommy Stevens 5'8" | 175 lbs | QB Grand Rapids Union | 2023 MI can get their offense humming, look out. This is a game I’m considering attending.
Grandville @ Rockford
This is the Game of the Week, without a doubt. This is a heated rivalry that my friends from Rockford/Grandville still bicker about. Although Rockford has won the past 4 contests, that’s not without 5 total OT periods and relentless effort from both programs. On one hand, Rockford has reloaded extremely well from last year and has some amazing talent, Mac VandenHout Mac VandenHout 5'11" | 190 lbs | QB Rockford | 2023 State MI , Brody Thompson Brody Thompson 6'1" | 195 lbs | WR Rockford | 2023 MI , and Rick Beison Rick Beison 6'1" | 215 lbs | LB Rockford | 2023 MI to name a few. On the other hand, Grandville comes in with many returners and is averaging 41.8PPG. If I had to bet, this will be a shootout, and there will be an extremely heavy media presence at this one. Carson Smith, Cash Ruff, and Jayden Terry Jayden Terry 5'8" | 175 lbs | RB Grandville | 2026 State MI are athletes to watch for the Bulldogs.
Mona Shores @ Zeeland West
This is the most intriguing game of the week, and this game may decide the outcome of the OK-Green. Both teams come in undefeated in league play, and both come in with dominant yet extremely different schemes. In many ways, it’s the Dux old-school offense against the Sailor’s new-school offense. Many athletes will be on the field with two extremely experienced, State-Champion coaching staffs. If I hadn’t already seen Mona Shores this season, I would be at this game.
