The Wolverines finish the season at 9-0 and have a great chance at being the next Public League team to bring home a state championship (Phillips, 2017).
Simeon is a complete team. They’re well coached and have the size and strength on both their offensive and defensive lines to match up with anyone in the trenches. They’re stacked with versatile athletes on both sides of the ball, and not to mention, they have two superstars in Andre Crews Andre Crews 5'9" | 175 lbs | ATH Simeon | 2023 State IL and Malik Elzy Malik Elzy 6'3" | 195 lbs | WR Simeon | 2023 State IL who can each take over a game in an instant.
Simeon (9-0) is the 2 seed in the 6A bracket and they face off against Oak Forest (5-4) this weekend as they began their quest to Champaign. But before we shift our focus to the playoffs, let’s take a look at some in-game highlights and some of the top performers from Simeon’s season finale…
Malik Elzy Malik Elzy 6'3" | 195 lbs | WR Simeon | 2023 State IL | WR | 2023
Elzy’s performance was another reminder why he’s considered one of the top prospects in the nation. He had well over 100 yards receiving with a touchdown and gave the opposing defense fits as they attempted to cover him down the field. He’s the complete package and everything you would want in a receiver. He’s big, physical, flashes a nice set of hands, and what I love the most about him is the tenacity he runs with after the catch. His physical attributes present a mismatch for most defensive backs, and he’s talented enough to carry this Simeon team through a deep playoff run.
Kaleb Sims Kaleb Sims 5'10" | QB Simeon | 2025 IL | QB | 2025
Sims didn’t start the game at quarterback, but he was the only quarterback to throw a touchdown during the game. Sims has a strong physique and is built like a running back, but he entered the game and got right to work by tossing two passing touchdowns and showcasing his ability to sing the rock and put points on the board.
Andre Crews Andre Crews 5'9" | 175 lbs | ATH Simeon | 2023 State IL | RB | 2023
Crews is the hottest running back in the state, and I’m not sure there’s a defense out there with the recipe to slow him down. Finished the game with four touchdowns which could have easily been five had it not been for a questionable holding call. He’s elite at breaking tackles and piling up the yards after initial contact. He processes information quickly and has the vision to make sudden cuts that usually equate to large gains and he’s a more than reliable receiving threat out of the backfield. Before the game I said Crews was “arguably” the best running back in the state, after watching him dominate the way he did, he might just be the best back in the state and is without a doubt the best I’ve seen in-person this season.
Simeon D-Line
Lane Tech’s game plan was simple–run, run, and run some more. Lane Tech threw the ball less than five times during the entire game and was sacked twice during two pass attempts. It was clear they wanted to win this game in the trenches, but they were no match for Simeon’s big boys up front. The Wolverines d-line was impressive to say the least. They pounded with Lane Tech throughout the entire game and not one time did I see them wear down. Christopher Burgess Jr Christopher Burgess Jr 6'4" | 230 lbs | DL Simeon | 2025 State IL . and Mikeshun Beeler Mikeshun Beeler 6'3" | 260 lbs | DL Simeon | 2024 State IL were two d-linemen who caught my eye with their impressive size and athleticism, but hats off to the entire d-line as they dominated the trenches.
