Every single Monday on Prep Redzone Oklahoma, we’ll get the week started with a look at the top ten games across the state of Oklahoma. And this week, we might have the best week of district games that we’ll see throughout the regular season, especially at the top. All eyes will be on several of these marquee match-ups. You have #1 facing #2 in Class 4A, the top four teams in Class 5A squaring off and a potential state title preview happening in Class 6A-2. Check back every Monday as we break down the top ten games every single week during the 2022 regular season.
1) #2 WAGONER (3-2) AT #1 CUSHING (5-0)
It’s hard to have any game other than the 1 VS 2 match-up in Class 4A in this spot. #1 Cushing will host #2 Wagoner in a battle for district supremacy but also the #1 spot in Class 4A moving forward. The Tigers have been outstanding so far this season as they have arguably the best offense in Class 4A and one of the best in the state led by their QB-WR duo of Blaze Berlowitz Blaze Berlowitz 6'3" | 195 lbs | QB Cushing | 2023 State OK and Camden Crooks Camden Crooks 6'0" | 190 lbs | WR Cushing | 2023 State OK . Cushing has been dominant so far as they’re averaging over 50 points per game. But they haven’t seen a defense as talented as Wagoner. The Bulldogs began the year 1-2 after losses to 5A top five teams Coweta and Grove. We didn’t knock the Bulldogs for that and kept them in the #2 spot. Since the 1-2 start, they haven’t given up a point since beginning district play in week four. That will change on Friday night but the Bulldogs will certainly provide the toughest test that Cushing’s offense has seen this year.
2) #4 DEER CREEK (5-0) AT #2 CHOCTAW (4-1)
In Class 6A-2, we get a rematch from last year’s playoff round as Choctaw will host Deer Creek. The Antlers went on the road and upset the Yellowjackets in the first round last year, before making it all the way to the state championship game. We love this match-up because both of these teams are legitimate state championship teams and they could see each other again in the playoffs. Choctaw will go as their senior quarterback Steele Wasel Steele Wasel 6'4" | 210 lbs | QB Choctaw | 2023 State OK goes. The Akron commit has been one of the most efficient quarterbacks in Oklahoma over the last two years. But he will be challenged by a Deer Creek secondary that forces turnovers and has some serious talent, including North Carolina commit Dale Miller Dale Miller 5'10" | 165 lbs | DB Deer Creek | 2023 State OK , who is considered one of the top corners in this part of the country. Both teams have been on a roll over the last few weeks and we believe that this game on Friday night will end up deciding who is the district champion.
3) #2 BISHOP McGUINNESS (5-0) AT #3 GUTHRIE (5-0)
The first of two massive games in Class 5A will see #3 Guthrie hosting #2 Bishop McGuinness. Both teams come into Friday night’s match-up with unbeaten records. The Blue Jays have plenty of momentum coming off their last two games. They’ll also be glad to return home after back to back games against ranked teams. First, they beat 4A’s Tuttle, followed by a Thursday night win over Piedmont last week. That Piedmont victory was a dominant performance by the defense as they shut out the Wildcats. But they’ll face a McGuinness offense that is one of the best in Class 5A. They have a perfect blend of passing and running and if you take one away, the Irish will torch you with the other. McGuinness has been dominant so far this season, with their closest game being a 29-point win over rival Bishop Kelley. But Friday’s game will be the toughest match-up for both teams this season.
4) #4 McALESTER (5-0) AT #1 COWETA (5-0) (THURS.)
For the second straight week, McAlester hits the road for one of the biggest games in the state. Last week, they traveled to Del City and won an overtime classic. The Buffaloes rallied to send it to the extra period and then decided to go for the win in overtime with the two point conversion. This week, they hit the road to face top ranked Coweta. The Buffaloes dominated this match-up last year and with this game taking place on Thursday, all eyes should be on this one. Coweta lost starting quarterback Carson Laverty Carson Laverty 6'1" | 185 lbs | QB Coweta | 2023 State OK in non-district play to a collarbone injury. But senior Na’Kylan Starks Na’Kylan Starks 6'0" | 170 lbs | ATH Coweta | 2023 State OK has stepped into the role and the Tiger offense has remained explosive. Starks gives the Tigers a dual-threat option at the QB position. For McAlester, they’ll rely on superstar Erik McCarty Erik McCarty 6'2" | 175 lbs | DB McAlester | 2023 State OK at the running back position. The OU commit took over the game with Del City and helped carry the Buffaloes to the win in week five.
5) #8 HILLDALE (4-1) AT #4 POTEAU (4-1)
While a lot of the attention in Class 4A will be on that marquee 1 VS 2 match-up, there are a few other good games to look out for in 4A and we go to eastern Oklahoma for the district showdown between Poteau and Hilldale. The Pirates will host the Hornets in a game that will certainly have major district standing implications. But this district is quickly becoming one of the more competitive districts in Class 4A, so there will still be plenty of work to do for both teams. This match-up also features two outstanding running backs. Hilldale senior Eric Virgil Eric Virgil 5'10" | 175 lbs | RB Hilldale | 2023 State OK has put up monster numbers this year, making 300 yard games look easy. And the Pirates counter with junior running back Dax Collins Dax Collins 6'2" | 180 lbs | ATH Poteau | 2024 State OK , who is one of the more versatile athletes in the state and seems to play his best in Poteau’s biggest games. Poteau has had Hilldale’s number but the Hornets are determined to break through and pull off the district upset.
6) #10 BLANCHARD (3-2) AT #3 TUTTLE (4-1)
From eastern Oklahoma to western Oklahoma but staying in Class 4A as #3 Tuttle hosts #10 Blanchard. The Lions have some momentum coming into this game after not only beating Newcastle last week, but shutting out the Racers and then climbing back into the top ten rankings after dropping out for a few weeks. Meanwhile, the Tigers bounced back from a non-district loss to Guthrie and have looked incredibly strong since that set back. This is a Tuttle team that looks a little different than what we’re used to seeing. They have an offense that can truly be dynamic with the passing and running game. They’re led by a sophomore in Brady Mcadoo Brady Mcadoo 6'0" | 180 lbs | RB Tuttle | 2025 State OK , who is very quickly becoming one of the more athletic offensive prospects in the 2025 class. Blanchard has a really strong offense as well and have been getting it done with the passing game. The winner here will be in the driver’s seat for the district crown.
7) #7 PLAINVIEW (4-1) AT #8 LONE GROVE (4-1)
The marquee game taking place in Class 3A this week will be in southern Oklahoma as #7 Plainview travels to face off with #8 Lone Grove. Plainview dropped their second game of the season to 4A’s Newcastle but have been perfect ever since. The Indians have been helped by the emergence of Blake Stewart Blake Stewart ATH Plainview | 2024 State OK at the running back position. He’s had an excellent start to the season so far and will look to continue that on Friday night against the Longhorns. Stewart has at least 100 yards in every game and is coming off his best performance last week when he went north of 200 yards in the win over Dickson. Similar to Stewart, Lone Grove has been led by their workhorse running back in senior Braxton Sparks. He’s coming off his best performance in last week’s win over Marlow. The Longhorns bounced back with the win last week after dropping their district opener to Heritage Hall in week four.
8) #1 GORE (5-0) AT POCOLA (4-2)
Can anyone stop the Gore Pirates in 2022? We’re about to find out as Class A’s #1 team will hit the road for arguably their toughest game of the regular season when they travel to Pocola. Gore has been lights out from the start of the season and they really haven’t been tested yet. Four of their five victories have been shutout wins. The other victory came when they beat Mounds by 34. The Pirates will eventually have to play a full game and Friday might be the first time. Pocola began the season in the top ten for Class A but after tripping up to 2A’s Spiro and Mena out of Arkansas, the Indians dropped out of the rankings, but are still a very dangerous team. Both teams have excellent offenses and they will be on full display here. Like several of the games this week, this game very well could end up deciding the district championship. It’s hard to see anyone other than these two capturing that district crown.
9) #1 STILLWATER (5-0) AT #5 SAND SPRINGS (3-2)
It’s another tough district match-up in the east side district of 6A-2 as #5 Sand Springs will host top ranked Stillwater. The Sandites bounced back from a week four loss at home to Muskogee by beating Tahlequah in a game that might have been closer than anyone anticipated coming into the week. Now, they return home and look to hand the Pioneers their first loss of the season. The Sandites are continuing to work in their freshman quarterback Easton Webb Easton Webb 6'4" | 205 lbs | QB Charles Page | 2026 State OK , who definitely has a lot of promise. But he’s going against a Stillwater defense where the strength is in the linebacker group and secondary. The Pioneers force a lot of turnovers and will provide a big test for the freshman. Meanwhile, on offense, the Pioneers have a great mix of the pass and run and can beat teams in a variety of ways. The Pioneers are looking to put back to back road wins together after dominating Booker T Washington on the road in week five.
10) #6 NORMAN NORTH (3-2) AT #3 JENKS (4-1)
While a lot of the attention this week will be on some of the other bigger classes, the top game in 6A-1 happens in Jenks as the two-time defending state champs will host Norman North. Jenks is starting to get into a groove as they get healthier and are getting back some of the players that they didn’t have earlier in the season. They’re looking to play a complete game for all four quarters and that could mean bad news for Norman North. However, the Timberwolves do come into this match-up with a bit of momentum. They survived an overtime shootout with Broken Arrow last week, winning 57-50. Senior quarterback Kamden Sixkiller Kamden Sixkiller 6'4" | QB Norman North | 2023 State OK might be the most dynamic player in this match-up. He threw for 200 yards and ran for over 200 yards in the win over Broken Arrow last week. The Trojans are still the favorite coming into this match-up, but things could get interesting if it turns into another shootout.
