Continue ReadingThe 2022 high school football season was an exciting one. There have been a lot of players that have stood out and jumped onto our radar this season in the state of Kentucky. Now that the playoffs are underway, I wanted to take a look back at some of the top players from the regular season in each class. With that in mind, I have decided to put together my All-State teams for each individual class. After covering 1A, 2A, and 3A, I will now turn my attention to the top players in 4A. With that being said, here is my 2022 4A Regular Season All-State offense.
Junior quarterback Jackson Wasik Jackson Wasik 5’9″ | 140 lbs | QB Lexington Catholic | 2024 State KY has had a breakout year for Lexington Catholic so far and is one of the biggest reasons for their very successful season. Wasik finished the regular season as the leading passer in 4A, completing 147/209 passes for 2,367 yards, 32 touchdowns and only four interceptions. He has a very strong arm with the ability to lead his receivers down the field and hit them in stride. Wasik is also a very accurate passer, putting the ball where only his intended receiver can catch it. He has also shown the ability to roll out and make throws on the run. When asked to do so, Wasik has also shown the ability to tuck the ball and pick up yards on the ground, running the ball 62 times for 169 yards and two scores during the regular season. Jackson currently holds an offer from Calumet College but I expect more to come his way going into his senior year as he has the talent to be a successful quarterback at the next level.
Sophomore running back Cortez Stone Cortez Stone 5’10” | 170 lbs | RB Louisville Central | 2025 State KY has established himself as one of the best ball carriers in the state this season. He finished the regular season with 200 carries for 1,531 yards, and 17 touchdowns. Stone has electric speed, bursting through the running lane and continuing to run right through the defense on his way to the end zone. He has also shown the elusiveness to make defenders miss in the open field. Stone also has shown that he is reliable in the passing game as a receiving threat, catching seven passes for 129 yards and a touchdown in the regular season. Cortez currently holds offers from Louisville, Western Kentucky, Eastern Kentucky, and Purdue, and I expect that list to continue to grow as he is a true Division I talent at running back.
Ryan Rayno Ryan Rayno 6’3″ | 190 lbs | RB Logan County | 2023 State KY has had an outstanding senior year so far. He finished the regular season with 195 carries for 1,646 yards and 20 touchdowns. Rayno has impressive vision as a ball carrier, finding the running lane and bouncing to the outside when needed. Once he gets to the outside or hits the open field, he uses his speed to run away from the defense. He has also shown the strength and contact balance to run straight through defenders in the open field without breaking stride. In the passing game, Rayno finished the regular season with five catches for 39 yards. While he doesn’t currently hold any offers, Ryan has received college interest and definitely has the talent to play at the next level.
Highlights
While he is mainly known as a kicker, Max DeGraff Max DeGraff 5’11” | 155 lbs | K Lexington Catholic | 2023 State KY has had a breakout year as a receiver this season. He finished the regular season as the 4A leader in receiving with 47 catches for 1,226 yards and 17 touchdowns. The main thing that sets him apart is his impressive speed. He uses his speed to create separation in the deep passing game and after the catch to run away from the defense. DeGraff has also shown the ability to make defenders miss in the open field after the catch. He also continued to show his ability as a kicker, finishing the regular season 47/48 on PATs and 6/7 on field goals. Max currently holds offers from Kentucky and Eastern Kentucky where he would likely find a role on special teams but could easily play receiver if asked to do so.
Daisjaun Mercer Daisjaun Mercer 6’0″ | 185 lbs | ATH Hopkinsville | 2023 State KY is a player that gets the job done on both sides of the ball for Hopkinsville but I liked what I saw most from him at receiver this season. Mercer finished his final regular season with 34 receptions for 722 yards and eight touchdowns. He has very impressive speed which he uses to run right by defensive backs in the deep passing game. Mercer is also a skilled route runner, using his quickness to create separation in his breaks. After the catch, he is able to use his speed and elusiveness to turn short passes into big gains. He has also shown promise as a ball carrier, running the ball 31 times for 230 yards and five touchdowns in the regular season. Mercer will also have value as a returner on special teams as he has the ability to break off on a long return at any moment. Daisjaun is committed to Miami (OH) where I see him being a key piece for them wherever they decide to play him.
Tyson Wagers Tyson Wagers 6’0″ | 155 lbs | WR Clay County | 2024 State KY is a player that has jumped onto my radar this season. He finished his junior regular season as Clay County’s leading receiver with 50 receptions for 854 yards and 11 touchdowns. Wagers is a dangerous deep threat with the speed to create separation and the ability to look the ball in over his shoulder to make catches without breaking stride. He is also a smooth route runner and has very reliable hands, even when making catches through contact. Tyson doesn’t currently hold any offers but will be a player to watch going into his final season as he has the talent to play somewhere at the next level.
Nolan Hunter Nolan Hunter 6’5″ | 205 lbs | TE Scott | 2023 State KY had an impressive senior year as he made the transition from receiver to tight end. He continued to be a big part of Scott’s passing attack, finishing the regular season with 18 catches for 263 yards and four touchdowns. Hunter showed the ability to line up on the outside at receiver and in the slot or H Back role. He showed the speed to pose as a deep threat and showed the ability to go up and catch the ball at its highest point. After the catch, he showed the strength to break tackles in the open field to pick up extra yards. I also liked the aggression he showed as a run blocker, running his feet through contact to drive his man down the field. Hunter also served as the team’s punter and played defensive end on defense but I like him best on offense. Nolan currently holds offers from Thomas More, Findlay, Walsh, Lindsey Wilson, and Union, and I see him developing into a very reliable tight end at the next level.
Highlights
Franklin West Franklin West 6’3″ | 310 lbs | OL Corbin | 2024 State KY is an offensive lineman that I’ve had high on my radar for a while now as he is currently our fourth ranked offensive line prospect in the class of 2024 in Kentucky. West is a very physical offensive lineman that lines up at left tackle and is a mauler in the run game. He explodes out of his stance and keeps his feet running through contact, driving his man down the field until he either hears the whistle or finishes with a pancake block. West also does a good job of getting to the second level and picking up blocks in the open field. In pass protection, he has solid footwork and shows the ability to pick up stunts and defeat counter moves. West has also seen reps at center and guard which will help give him versatility at the next level. Franklin currently holds offers from Eastern Kentucky and Miami (OH), and I expect more to come for him going into his senior year as he has the talent to play at the Division I level.
Schlarman is another junior offensive lineman that I’ve had my eye on for a while. He continued to impress this season, lining up at center on an impressive Lexington Catholic offensive line unit. Schlarman does a great job of calling out pre-snap adjustments and picking up stunts. He is very physical in the run game, snapping the ball quickly while stepping to his man then driving them down the field. In pass protection, he does a great job of getting the snap off quickly and getting into his kick step to pick up his man and protect his inside gap. Joe doesn’t currently hold any offers but I expect some to come soon as he has been receiving college interest and has the talent to play at the next level.
Zane Mullins Zane Mullins 6’4″ | 280 lbs | OL Lincoln County | 2023 State KY is a talented offensive lineman that finished off his high school career with a strong senior year. He has shown the ability to line up at both left and right tackle this season, asserting dominance at both positions. Mullins is a great run blocker, showing a quick first step and driving his feet to create movement off the line of scrimmage. He also does a great job of getting to the second level and picking up blocks in open space. Mullins is also very reliable in pass protection with great footwork and the ability to mirror pass rushers off the edge. He also uses his strength to toss pass rushers to the side and keep them away from the quarterback. Mullins currently holds offers from Centre, Kentucky Wesleyan, Grinnell, Lindsey Wilson, and Hanover, and I can see him being a solid addition to the offensive line for any of those schools.
Another offensive lineman that has had an impressive senior year is Dratavyn Barber Dratavyn Barber 5’10” | 270 lbs | OL Warren East | 2023 State KY from Warren East. Barber is the leader of the Warren East offensive line at center. In pass protection, he does a great job of getting into his pass set quickly after snapping the ball. He also does a very good job of picking up stunts and protecting his inside gap. Barber is a mauler in the run game, driving his man several yards off the ball very frequently. He finishes his blocks through the whistle, resulting in several pancake blocks. Barber currently holds offers from Anderson University and Kentucky Christian, and I can see him developing into a solid offensive lineman at the next level.
Wrapping up my offensive line for the 4A Regular Season All-State Offense is senior Kadin Switzer Kadin Switzer 6’2″ | 295 lbs | OL Logan County | 2023 State KY from Logan County. Switzer lines up at right tackle and is a key component in Logan County’s dominant rushing attack. On outside runs, he does a great job of stepping to his outside defender and driving them out of the picture to create a running lane for the ball carrier. He has also shown the ability to pull from the tackle spot and destroy anything in his path as a lead blocker in the open field. In pass protection, he does a great job of getting into his pass sets and mirroring pass rushers off the edge, not allowing any penetration into his inside gap. Kadin currently holds and offer from Minnesota West but I can see more coming his way as he definitely has the talent to play at the next level.
To wrap up my 4A offense, I had to add an “Athlete” slot as Montavin Quisenberry Montavin Quisenberry 5’9″ | 160 lbs | ATH Boyle County | 2025 State KY is one of the most electric players in the state that has done a little bit of everything for Boyle County this season. He led Boyle County in rushing, carrying the ball 60 times for 602 yards and six touchdowns in the regular season. Quisenberry has great vision with the ability to find the running lane and hit it quickly. Once he hits the open field, he has shown the breakaway speed to run away from the defense and the elusiveness to make defenders miss in the open field. Montavin also finished as his team’s leading receiver, finishing the regular season with 40 catches for 490 yards and nine touchdowns. He uses his speed to run right by defenders in the deep passing game and his quickness to help him in his route running to create separation from defensive backs. After the catch, he uses his speed and elusiveness to turn short passes into big gains. He has also shown that he is a dangerous returner on special teams returning two kickoffs and two punts for touchdowns in the regular season. Montavin also plays a key role on defensive as a defensive back but I like him best with the ball in his hands on offense. Quisenberry currently holds offers from Kentucky and Louisville, and I expect that list to grow as he is a truly special talent.
